FYI The green "N" sticker by the license plate is required for someone with a learners drivers license. Asians tend to be stuck with the "N" license longer than most lol.

In Vancouver it seems as if all the nice cars are driven by Asian or South Asian kids. The universities here are disproportionately Asian (rumor is they now use reverse-affirmative-action here to get some white students into med school). The parking garages at UBC are filled with BMWs and Maseratis.

I heard this is happening in other Canadian and west coast cities. Does anyone worry about a power shift when the local economy is controlled by foreigners?

About the learners tag, it's sort of a running gag in the import car scene. So you'll see the Japanese learners tag like this..

As for rich immigrants.. It's nothing new. It's been happening for decades. The official terms is "parachute children". It's when wealthy people from other countries send their kids to the US or Canada for education. I knew a guy in high school that was Brazil. He got a fat allowance each month to rent a house, buy a car, and cover other living expenses.

I'd say the number of parachute children has increased exponentially in recent years, due to the economic growth in China. And somewhat recently, this phenomena has hit another level. Chinese couples come to the US for maternity vacations. Basically, pregnant women from China come to the States towards the end of their pregnancy to give birth in the US. Tada! Easy peasy US citizenship for their children.

kiwiLifter saidYeah, it is a serious concern.

Main problem is a collapse in birth rates in Western democracies, leading to opening the flood gates to third worlders, plus the PC nonsense about "multiculturalism" and "diversity".

Those rich immigrants got their money through graft and corruption, thats how those Asian countries operate - corruption is a way of life there, a cultural norm.

We got enough problems already in the West without allowing them to flood in and bring their "cultural practices" with them.

    You're kidding

Well we know kiwilifter hates "PC muppets" "squinty eyes" and "flat noses", so what do you expect lol.

At least white people still control the media, even if they no longer control the economy.

I'm not being funny kiwi lifter, canadians. americans, australians and others that have a problem with this but you realise that the reason you're in the country you're trying to 'defend' or whatever was one in which your relatives emigrated to?

I mean no hate or anything but I'd say white people historically have been amongst the worst immigrants. It's a bit hypocritical complaining about immigration when without it you wouldn't be in the country in the first place in order to complain about how it's changing due to immigration.

LOL. Reminds me of 1980, when there was literally a fleet of brand new black Corvettes and T-top Trans-Ams on campus for all the Iranian "refugee" kids.

    Real easy answer to this....

International students have to pay like three to four times more in tuition costs than domestic students. The international students are essentially funding the operations of the university. The state...at least here in the US no longer provides enough funding to public universities, so they need to seek funding elsewhere...enter international student.

Given that international students need to cough up boku cash.... ie..their parents are almost always "well-off"....so to have cars like these is really not that shocking or surprising considering their families have money.

    And there u have it.

While there are some immigrants who are rich from their respective countries and send their children to school here, there are also many who are not. There are many immigrants who are living in the west (us, Canada, Europe) who are working very hard to achieve that American dream. I am one of them. I worked since I was 16. Cannot afford a car until I turned 22. Still working hard and not driving those nice cars. But that is fine. I am being productive and self-reliant. I met many other immigrants who are in the same shoes as me, who goes to school and works as well.
I think a lot of those wealthy kids do not end up staying too long in the US. Because if they are rich in their countries, why do they need to come here? I think they only come here for education and then they return. I do not have the statistics to prove it but for me it makes sense. If I were rich in my country darn I am not staying here in the US. Don't get me wrong, I love the US and the countless opportunities that it gave me, but I am here because I cannot get those opportunities from my country of origin.
Please do not generalize and do not hate on immigrants.

It depends where the immigrants come from, for example christian Lebanese, Russian etc. fit better into western culture than Saudis and Pakistanis, but I definitely agree +1
    (PS I am an immigrant).

I have no problem with a bit of immigration, but not the flood we are dealing with now - like I said it is a desperate attempt to deal with collapsing birthrates in the West.

The government should just force white people to have more kids by heavily taxing those over 25 without kids, and giving the money to white families with 3+ kids etc.

    lol.

This article came out a while ago, regarding the state of higher education in US and Canada. Yes, the immigrants bring lots of money and our foreign students subsidize our education, but at what social cost?

^^ "Boston Globe article early this year asked, “Do colleges redline Asian-Americans?” and concluded there’s likely an “Asian ceiling” at elite U.S. universities. After California passed Proposition 209 in 1996 forbidding affirmative action in the state’s public dealings, Asians soared to 40 per cent of the population at public universities, even though they make up just 13 per cent of state residents. And U.S. studies suggest Ivy League schools have taken the issue of Asian academic prowess so seriously that they’ve operated with secret quotas for decades to maintain their WASP credentials.

Princeton University sociologist Thomas Espenshade surveyed 10 elite U.S. universities and found that Asian applicants needed an extra 140 points on their SAT scores to be on equal footing with white applicants"

I don't think your article helps this "rah rah, dey took r jerbs" sentiment that you and Kiwi share.

For a majority of the parachute children, once they graduate, they go back to their home country to start a business or work for a corporation. So I think "immigrant" is sort of a misnomer here. They're not here to stay.

Long story short, I have a lot of illegal immigrant friends. It costs them $8000 to get smuggled here. They say they send most of their earnings back home so they can return and retire as rich men.

icon_rolleyes.gifI think the rest of us are talking about legal immigrants.

    From Wikipedia:

Asian Americans are the only minority in the United States whose median income is higher than whites. In 2009, the median income for Asian males was $37,330, compared to the median income for non-Hispanic white males of $36,785...

Part of the explanation for Asians’ higher wages is their greater-than-average educational attainment: in the 1990s, 23.3 percent of the total U.S. male population had at least a college degree, while 48.7 percent of Asian Indian men, 41.6 percent of Filipino men, and 35 percent of Chinese men had at least a college degree.[4] The higher educational attainment of Asians masks the fact that a wage gap exists between Asians and whites of the same occupations. Whites earn more than Asians in almost all occupational categories when other factors are controlled.[4] However, the gap is decreasing, as Asians are gaining more income from their education status and now have wages that are 92 percent of those of whites in comparable jobs

So Asian Americans earn more than White Americans due to being more educated, but earn less than whites if they had the same job and credentials. And it's probably safe to say that the very top jobs are still white-dominated, cuz it's an old boys club.

Nowhere did I say that they didn't earn their place fairly (more than fairly, in fact, as the facts show). I'm arguing the cultural effect they have on the rest of us... do we really want university to be so competitive? The article says that white people are avoiding top tier schools because the Asians have made the learning environment there so unbalanced.
