Woman found guilty in attack on gay couple walking pink poodle

Wife of man accused of striking gay man with a crowbar in Oregon was found guilty of obstructing the course of justice

"Saraya Gardner, 23, was found guilty on one count of obstruction of justice in a Oregon federal court.

Her husband, 23-year-old George Mason Jr, is accused of striking a gay man with a crowbar and hurling homophobic slurs at him on 1 March last year.

David Beltier, the 26-year-old victim, was with his boyfriend Jeremy Mark walking their pink poodle ‘Beauty’ when he was hit.

After the attack, according to KATU, he said he was lucky to be alive."

But have charges been filed against whoever dyed the dog pink? Also purple and green, it would appear. Multiple offenses.

Poodles, the scum of the Earth. Instead of focusing on Jews, Hitler really should've been focusing on eradicating all poodles from this world. Nothing gets gayer then a gay couple walking a pink poodle though, so applause to the man who hit them.

No, she was just convicted of lying to the cops about where her husband was hiding. He's been in jail since last year.

it was a woman with a crowbar though. icon_confused.gif

Next time read the "article", the woman was just misleading cops for her man who did the crime.

    Wow, those poor animals.

I'm curious what the reported motive in this incident was. People don't just crowbar others for no apparent reason. Hate crime seems to be the obvious choice, but could be animal rights activists?

No one else sees anything wrong about this? icon_eek.gif

If there's a good thing about the episode, it's that the dog wasn't harmed. Some haters don't stop to think that pets have no say in how they're made to look by their humans.

It's because of the occasional stray loony that I've never bought a rainbow-pattern cat collar. My gray tabby would've looked fab in one. icon_neutral.gif

Doesn't the story say her husband struck the gay guy with a crowbar, not his poodle?

He was driving around, and it was a pair of bolt cutters. Why would a homeless tweeker keep bolt cutters in his car? You just know a crime was going to be committed with them, one way or another.

Another attack on gays in one of the "progressive" liberal areas of the US. How very interesting.

You do realize hate isn't localized right? It's an emotion, something everyone (whom isn't psychopathic) is capable of feeling. And with exposure to media these days bigotry and hate speech can reach just about anyone prompting harmful actions such as this. I'm not sure how fascinating or "interesting" this is as you put it but it seems rather obvious to me. ;)

If those gays seen their pets as family, then what they did was child abuse, and nothing less. Off with their heads for child abuse. People ponder why some say gays should not be in the care of children, if they want them to look like a rainbow flag.icon_rolleyes.gif

    Why conservatives should never speak:

    1. The entire country is big blue cities/urban areas surrounded by purplish-to-red suburbs and red rural areas. That's as true of Oregon and California as it is of Alabama and Texas.
    2. Hillsboro, Oregon is very suburban.
    3. In Oregon's legislature, Hillsboro is mostly represented by Republicans with a few exceptions.
    4. Hillsboro, Oregon is not particularly liberal.
    5. But that point is moot, since it makes sense that where gays are more likely to be out and visible there are more opportunities for discrimination which are also more likely to be reported than they would in some backwoods conservative trailer park town where gays are more likely to be in hiding/fear.

    Conservatism is a mental disorder.

Rather you agree with dying dogs fur or not is not the issue, the issue is the attack and it's never acceptable to attack anyone, and this attack was about hate, not the dog's color, that seems that is evident from the slurs the attacker hurled.

Anyone in this thread could be attacked with a crowbar if someone "sensed" something about one of us or made up a judgement based on any reasoning. Incidents like this shouldn't be made light of.

Aside from the fact that they dyed their dogs in those nasty colors...Poodles were actually hunting dogs. The 'poodle cut' were originally meant to prevent major drag when the dogs dove into the water to retrieve prey and still protect the vulnerable spots that susceptible to the cold.

Oregon is like most other areas of the world. The more liberal areas are the major cities and as you move farther and farther away from them they get more conservative and less likely to support people that are different than themselves.

I have a sister that lives in Oregon. As a woman and being Asian, she does not feel safe going outside of the major cities on her own. She told me that there are a lot of white supremacists that live in the boonies. Oregon leans liberal but there are also very conservative areas in the rural areas.

Not that it's relevant to the attack, but I don't know where you guys are getting the idea that Hillsboro is "remote" or "rural" or "republican". It's part of the metro area. The CPU in your computer was probably made there. The traffic sucks.

The only "cultural" effects of note are possibly that the local cops actually went to the effort to track down the guy who did this and charge him with a list of crimes. In some places , they would have probably just laughed it off, or "filed a complaint."

"Several witnesses said the attacker, later identified as Mason, did a U-turn, got out of his car and went after the couple in the middle of a crosswalk in the middle of the day."

"[Victim David] Beltier said he and his boyfriend, Jeremy Mark, were on a walk with their pink poodle "Beauty" – one of three colorful dogs dyed with Kool-Aid for Easter. Beltier said he dyed the dogs for fun."

"If convicted of hate crime, [attacker] Mason faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. [wife] Gardner faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison if convicted of obstruction of justice."

Some thoughts: the attacker evidently had the crowbar in his 1998 Range Rover, which could have been there for any number of legitimate reasons, not for hunting gays. But his actions as described by witnesses clearly constitute a deliberate and unprovoked attack, the crowbar being a convenient weapon he had with him.

Also, I haven't read where he and his wife live. It may not be in Hillsboro, OR at all, where the attack occurred, so that debates about its local political composition may be irrelevant. Where does HE live? He could have been just passing through Hillsboro that day.

The dogs were each dyed a different color for Easter (the attack was March 1st), like colored eggs, using Kool-Aid. I didn't know that could work, but doesn't seem like it would be toxic. I presume all 3 dogs are naturally white, though not all poodles.

Interesting if the report is correct that the attacker could get 10 years for the crowbar assault itself, but his wife could get 20 years for giving false answers about her husband's whereabouts to police. More evidence of how irrational sentencing in the US is.

    TOY Poodles, yes. icon_rolleyes.gif

Standard Poodles are one of the brightest beasts out there.

And I agree: anyone dyeing any animal an artificial color should be horse-whipped, at least!icon_evil.gif
