I saw a debate on this on the news a few months ago.
The Native American organizations object to the word but the majority of the Native Americans polled didn't mind it.
Once again, our leaders seem to have their own agenda.

Stanford changed from the "Indians" to the "Cardinal" several years ago. Most people were okay with the change.

Let's see, they were established in 1932. And all of a sudden, now they want to change the name because it's offensive now? Why now? People all of a sudden have an issue with this? It's sort of like Christmas. When I was a kid and growing up, Christmas is what was said; Merry Christmas. But you can't do that anymore because it offends people.
Unless the team feels like they really have to change their name, they shouldn't be forced it's doing it because a few people all of a sudden feel offended by it.

Yes, and I don't understand why people are against the change. There is not one good reason to keep the name. The white man committed biological warfare and genocide against the Native Americans. Many people claiming white heritage today have some Native American ancestry in their blood, but where is the respect, the reconstruction, the amends? Thanksgiving is bullshit! This country was built on atrocities that we couldn't fathom in our worst nightmares, and so what do we do but shit on ancient burial grounds? It's a disgrace. They should change the name to the Washington Rednecks, if they absolutely must be racist about it.

If the First Nations people started a league of some kind and named their team Pale skins, would it be it considered racist?

What would their mascot look like?

I think they should change the name to the Washington Nazis.

    Yup.

To Pigskins. It's a slam-dunk for everybody but PETA.

    Yes and no.
If actual Native Americans are offended by this name, then I believe it should be changed.
However if it's only a bunch of busy-bodies of other nationalities that are raising this flag, then no.
Personally if I were a Native American, I would be offended by the name "Redskin."

Sounds like something the bigots of the right wing would use. Past and presently. icon_rolleyes.gif

Does this apply to any other ethnic mascots? Trojans? Spartans (you cannot seriously tell me the dopey Michigan State Spartan is somehow honoring Sparta), Turks, etc? Or is it only to apply to anything involving Native Americans?

Yes - if any Native Americans are offended by having their culture or identity portrayed by a sports team it absolutely should be changed. I guess the question is whether Red Skin is a term of pride used by the native Americans or a derogatory term used by settlers... We're talking about human dignity and respect vs. appeasing sports fans - there really shouldn't be a debate!

    Yes.

For the first 200 years of this country, genocidal policies for Native Americans have come from DC, so I think having a team named the "Redskins" is just tacky. If it were just about another city, it'd might be OK.

It seams like a no brainier to me; a win win.
Changing the name would generate more money, not to mention possible doubling the value of team memorability already out there--I made a butt load when the Browns left Cleavland, then laughed my ass off when they came back.

Yes. I dealt with this in the 70's when my college dropped the Indians. I was appalled and offended because I had always taken such pride in the symbol. But ya know what? The Indians who had gone there hated it and they were offended. They get to make that call, not us.. The rest of us need to shut up and say OK. Anything else is racial subordination and we all know how that feels. "I don't mind if gays are in our town, I just don't know why they have to rub our faces in it by asking for special treatment." Same thing.

Not quite. My family is from Sparta and we still maintain ties to it. I still have family there, and friends...when they come here they get just as pissed about our portrayal in "popular culture." How is it any different? It's still racism, is it not?

I'm all for changing mascots, but don't fuckin devalue one form of bullshit saying it isn't as valid as another form of bullshit.

No-as an American of Native American descent I see no problem with this-just more liberals trying to make something out of nothing!

The US committed genocide against Native Americans, and now exploits them for shits and giggles.... If you can't see how reprehensible that is then you're probably just a dumb cracker.... Maybe the Washington Crackers would be a more suitable name. Their mascot could be bleach faced devil with a whip.

I'm fine with a name change given the history involved, but when it boils down-cultural misappropriation is cultural misappropriation. I think that yes, changing is a good start, but I also think in doing so we should look at and change the other ethnic mascots as well.

By the way, nice ad hom to my honest question about ethnic mascots and why changing some is more okay than changing others.

I feel like you're willfully ignoring the main argument. I think Hotjoe's point still stands.
