This is awesome news. Finland is a very gay friendly country. Probably a little of that open mindedness could seep across the border into neighboring Russia and rattle Vladimir Putin's primitive brain.

and how is this going to change Russia's antigay policy? If I recall, swimming is a summer olympic sport, not a winter olympic sport. Bad timing, wrong olympic games.

Glad to hear of another LGBT athlete coming out while still competing/performing. I look forward to more athletes doing the same. It is high time for the closet doors of the sports world to burst open.

Granted that swimming is a summer Olympic sport that is totally irrelevant to the winter Olympics, the true fact remains that Finland is one of Russia's neighbors and that a move like this could have a possible impact on Russia. It could possibly even make Vladimir Putin rethink his policies and open his mind to what other countries have done. I am fully aware that possibility is very remote but it could still happen out of the blue. Anything is possible in this unpredictable world.

Is there ever a bad time for an individual to come out?

I mean if he was inspired to come out because of this anti-gay law in Russia, it's still not a bad time for him to come out.

With all these Olympic swimmers and divers coming out, I wouldn't be surprised if the Russian Orthodox Church starts pressuring both Vladimir Putin and the Russian Parliament to permanently ban the sports of swimming and diving claiming them to be perverse and too gay.
