In 1963 I was a beginning Freshman at a Jesuit boys prep school, age 14 (we used the 4-year high school model, no middle school). And our entire Freshman class was brought into the school chapel for a lecture - about the evils of masturbation!
And the Jesuit addressing us tried to be "hip" and "with it" by using all the common slang: "hardon" "boner" "dick" "jerking off", etc. I sat there very uncomfortably, as I know many of the other boys did, too. A priest talking gutter language to me was not only jarring, but really more than a bit déclassé for his audience in an exclusive private school.
This was a Catholic church, where we heard Mass, said our prayers, gave our confessions. Plus to quote Robin Williams from the movie Birdcage
: "And there's a crucifix in it." Not to mention statues of the Virgin Mary and assorted saints all around. We couldn't have done this in the school auditorium?
And we were told how masturbation was not only a mortal sin, but also morally and medically bad for us. No hairy palms stuff circa 1890s, or insanity, but it would make us weak, dissipated, do badly in our studies, and we'd fail to fully develop into "real men" with a normal interest in women. Oh... so that must be it.
And I thought this stuff went out with the 1960s...
