CRUISING IN THE LOCKER ROOM

OK I'm starting to get real creeped out... Is it just me or has the locker room become the new de facto bookstore backroom. More and more, each day the cruisy-ness in the locker room is becoming over the top. There are guys I see daily in the locker room who did not set as much as a foot in the weight room or any other part of the gym, but have been at the gym as long as I have and from what I can tell, spent the last 2 hours doing the circuit in the back: you know-- locker>sauna>shower>repeat.

Guys used to be a little more discreet about their passing glances, and some of the not-so-obvious attention I can easily look over. But now, guys have little-to-no shame in their game. And its not just in the more gay-friendly or gay-borhood gyms, but even in the suburban family environments (actually can be worse there). And dont even get me started about the sauna-- with guys staring at you and strokin themselves without a second thought and following you into shower even if you welcomed their advances or not.icon_rolleyes.gif

All-in-all, I really just don't like it... and I'm at a small loss at how to deal. I've tried changing gyms when the scene gets more out of control than I can handle, but alas disgusting, old, desperate perverts are apparantly everywhere.

So I'm wonderin does everyone see this happening? Do you participate or get more creeped out like me? How do you deal with the cruisiness especially the guys who follow and prey upon you? Or is my gag reflex just too hyper-sensitive and I need to go to Prude's Anonymous icon_wink.gif

If I were in the sauna and someone started jerking off, I'd say "What they hell are you doing?"

Perhaps yes, perhaps no? Might be true for your gym, not elsewhere.

I can tell you that I go to my gym to only use the steam room when I'm feeling a bit under the weather, when a work-out is more than I want. Time in the sauna or steam room has value in itself, with or without time on the floor.

So what else are these guys doing? Are they obviously cruising you, or your own imagination? Really stroking themselves, or merely adjusting while they sit?

I don't see this happening here, even in the gayest gym in the Fort Lauderdale area. If you've found a de-facto gay bathhouse, maybe you should give directions.

I wear contacts/glasses. When I go to the gym I do not have the contacts or glasses in/on. So I'm 1/2 blind. I always keep my music going through my phones and for the most part stay in my own little zone. I actually do not go to the gym for any social reason. I want to do my routine with as little interuption as possible so I can get on with my day. In the sauna/whirlpool/steamroom I will chat with anyone that starts up a conversation although I am not into carrying on a lenghtly discussion. I also for the most part keep my eyes to myself. especially in the showers. The few times that I have noticed someone taking a "peek" or carrying an erection with them(1/2 blind, remember), I pretty much ignore them and just finish my thing and leave. Maybe you should find another part of the city. I know that is a hassle for you but maybe it will help. Somewhere out from downtown/midtown...

Thank you very much rankoutsider for I was going to say the same thing. I have my own agenda: work out and get out. I do use the facilities shower and move on to take care of business: boyfriend, illustration, read a book, etc. Pretty much guys just do their own thing and move on, I don't see anyone cruising.

I've been told I go to the "gay gym" and that guys are constantly cruising and hooking up there. I never notice it - guess I go, work out, shower facing the wall, and head home.

Yes yes, i too don't go to the gym searching for this activity. Im 110% business when I go... ALL the more reason that its gettin so creepy-- these guys are so direct and obvious that their goal is to MAKE you notice. I'd love to go upside their heads but I'm afraid they enjoy that in some sick twisted way. ANd if you confront them they can use the ol "adjustin myself" BS line. Trust me I got a nice piece and it dont take me THAT long to "readjust" myself. I have tried changing gyms as well (my 4th different one now) it's all the same. And the gym i go to is majority "STRAIGHT." I think its all the married, sexually repressed guys who are carryin on and such. I'd probably expect more at a gay establishment.

Anyway just tryin to see if other's are having the same level of what we title "carryin' on" at their gyms

The worst things I've encountered in the locker room at the location of the gym that I frequent 95% of the time was...

    1. People who couldn't flush.

    2. This overweight guy eating a meal replacement bar. You'd think it was some KFC or turkey feast because he couldn't stop smacking. The last thing I want to hear when I'm stripping down to my skimpies getting ready to work out is someone smacking. I mean, yes it's yummy, keep it to yourself. No he never went onto the floor to my knowledge, I guess he thought eating a protein bar in a locker room constitutes working out. I guess for some people it's about baby steps.

Seriously though, if you see anything lewd going on speak with management or give them a heads up that they might want to patrol the locker room more frequently at this, this, and this time. You have a right to work out there and use their facilities without being made to feel uncomfortable by other members' trying to use it as a lowbrow hook up site.

Shaving their privates!? Good god. I mean, on what level is that ever acceptable somewhere public? I don't get that at all.

Maybe you should all move to New Zealand - i've never encountered here and think if I did I would be put off. Like others have said, you are there for a reason and that isn't to be cruised.

I did my best to ignore it while ai was at the gym. Part of the reason I starting buying some more equipment on craig's list and working out at home. I have the space for it now, so I'm building up my own home gym - much better.

If I want to mix working out with sex, I can just invite a buddy over to work out at home. Not like that'll happen anytime soon, though!

My gym's steam room has a sign prohibiting personal grooming inside. Some guys would want to shave their faces in there because the steam softens the beard. But it also makes a mess, and the floor gets slippery from the shaving cream.

As for shaving pubes, I've seen guys do that in the open gang showers. I still find it a bit strange, and an ex-BF used to do it all the time, right next to me and others.

Have you ever had guys stand still - staring right at you as you undress or shower? The guys who pull this shit are getting bolder (as some have suggested above) but what can you do but try to ignore it - and stay focused on getting dressed and getting out of there? I guess I take the open-mouthed stares as a compliment.........sort of a reward for all the work I do to look like this!

Me, too. I'm nearly blind without my glasses or contacts, so I often don't see much in these locker room circumstances, though I do wear glasses or contacts when working out. I joke that I wouldn't know if a naked woman entered the gang shower, because I see almost nothing unless the guy stands right next to me, which helps me control myself in an otherwise homoerotic environment.

Sometimes in a men's dry sauna, however, if it's customary for guys to bring reading material inside (when not prohibited) I'll keep my bifocals on. Then I can see all the eye candy for once, and have the newspaper to cover my lap if I start showing my interest.

Contacts are more problematic. I have daily soft disposables, mostly for social occasions, and not surprisingly the sauna can dry them out. Even in the steam room I have to squint, because the steam can flush away the lubricating tears and make the lenses stick to my eyelids. And if I get soap in my eyes in the shower, that pair of soft contacts is permanently contaminated. Nature just didn't equip me to be a locker room cruiser. icon_cry.gif

I work out at a World Gym in San Diego and I never see any cruising. But there is only showers there and it is 90% str8 and professional bodybuilders. To tell you the truth I wouldn't mind seeing some of the guys at my gym show a little interest but am never in the shower/dressing room area more than 5min.

We don't have a sauna, and have stall showers, maybe that prevents it?

Or I could just be oblivious, that's a definite possibility.

I workout at a local YMCA - in a separate fitness area where no one under 18 is aloud. It has a steam room / open shower area. There are certain times of the day that i try to avoid going there because of the amount of cruising taking place - just as others have described.
Managment does their best to have memberships revoked nevertheless it still goes on.
Occassionaly some of the heterosexual men will openly comment about all the fags "ruining" the place - of course, some of these fags are married closeted men. Regardless, that is one thing i despise about some gay/bi/closeted men - many contribute to this stereotype of the gay community.
Some local parks also have a similar problem with cruising - there are a couple of parks that i would never take my kids to.

No "Prudes Anonymous" for you. I think your reaction is sort of normal- it's natures way of saying "That guy's a creeper"

I don't have much experience with this, though. I'm used to working out at my college gym- the guys there are in too much denial to really pull that stuff.

    But they still look.

I'm usually in and out pretty quickly however every now and then I do take a sauna. I do notice guys doing a little stroking here and there but find that if I just ignore it, they generally stop. However there is this one old creeper that has pissed me off till I blew up. He was following me around the gym grabbing himself. I was so irritated that I finally just ended my workout (early) and went to shower off. 1 minute after jumping in the shower, he showed up right across from me yanking on his old ball sack smiling. finally I turned to him and told him that his stalking is creeping me out and making me uncomfortable. He of course denied it (with a smile on his face). So I told him that if the gym can't kick him out for being a creep they won't kick me out for putting his face through tile. He's never bothered me again.

I don't mind someone taking a quick peek, or even looking at me and smiling in the shower (showing me some interest and just kind of noticing all the work I've been doing) But I'm not at the gym for sex or to watch some guy jerk off.

Old guys making the locker room into their own personal spa is pretty common. I'm in the military and have been to gyms all over and that seems to be the norm. I used to have a membership to Ballys and now I go to 24hr Fitness. Old guys just seem to enjoy hanging out in the locker room balls all the way to their knees. At my gym the geezers seem pretty harmless but I make it a point not to shower at the gym. Something tells me the workers don't sanitize the floor w/ disinfectant. Maybe I'm just never there when they do it but I'd prefer to use my own shower at home if it's all the same. The sauna in my 24 is unisex. It should be pretty stroke free in there but I've never used it so I wouldn't know for sure. If it gets to the point where it is bothering you I would make a complaint to the management. I mean you are paying your fees. You shouldn't have to put up with silly shit like that. They can perhaps have workers walk through the locker rooms keep an eye on stuff. If guys are creeping in the locker rooms they can just ask them to leave. If they notice the guy is a problem then they can raise the issue to management. The gym is where I go to unwind and forget about shit. Just me the weights and my Ipod. I won't put up w/ anything trying to disrupt that holy trinity lol. Good luck dude.

It all depends on the location of the gym and the population that attends; some are more cruisier than others. Here in SF the SOMA Gold's may as well be a pick up bar vs a gym, hence why I don't go! Not that my 24Hr Fitness by any means NON CRUISEY but it's not as BLATANT and what not, but it's there! But then again this IS SF! Back home in San Diego, the gyms I went to were not in the Gay-hood, and they weren't cruisey at all.

Count me in with the guys getting pissed off at this trend. There is one increasingly obese troll I have seen at two Ballys in town who never does anything athletic. If they start closing some locations because of their recently chapter 11 filing, the trolls will have to go elsewhere. I talk more to the straight guys at my gym than most of the gay guys because the former are there to lift, God only knows why some of the latter are there.
