Who sails all year? Who is strictly a fair-weather sailor?

It can't be any colder than skiing... I was out last weekend, but at least I had hot coffee simmering in the galley. There were some kids out in lasers. Even a couple of guys on SUPs.

This weekend, the boat is literally frozen into the ice icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

No sailboat here but I can't imagine sailing in the winter. Wouldn't the wind chill be abysmal?

Can the freezing ice around the boat damage the hull?

Like I said, it can't be any colder than skiing. And you have your warming hut right with you all the time. (Except for those kids in the lasers.)

The ice in there is only about 5/8" thick this week. When I shoveled the snow off the boat, it broke free. But I wouldn't want to try to push through it. Some of the boot-stripe paint came away with the ice icon_mad.gif

I just realized that the sheriffs rescue boat is stuck in there too. Though they could probably push through it if they had to, with their aluminum hull and big motors.

All through the 90's, I'd go scuba diving on friends' boats in the San Juan Islands at least once a month. But the biggest, nicest one had carpeting and shit, and they had this rule about "no wetsuits in the salon." (Of course, they had expensive dry suits.) So I'd be out in the cockpit stripping down to my speedo in the snow. Thereafter, I'd go down to the engine room and sit in between the diesels until my teeth stopped chattering.

Live in Vancouver, Canada and our team sails (trains) all year round on Lasers/ Radials.

Not always pleasant lol.. but you do what has to be done to maintain your skill set.
