Sock Accounts Sued for Scraping Profiles

Several holders of sock accounts on LinkedIn were named as defendant in a new lawsuit recently filed by LinkedIn. The lawsuit is a federal lawsuit in California against 10 defendants, claiming that the defendants created fake profiles to improperly scrape data from LinkedIn profiles so they can set up competing recruiting Web sites.

A party can bring a suit against a “John Doe” defendant when the party isn't sure who actually took the action that's the subject of the suit. Now that the suit is filed, Linkedln can initiate discovery to figure out the identities of the defendants.

One of those claims is for damages under the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). The CFAA prohibits the “unauthorized” access of computer data. Here, Linkedln contends the John Does used phony information to set up the profiles. And in Linkedln's view, this made the access “unauthorize.”

Discuss its ramification here on RJ.

Nothing new. Many social media sites started out with either fake or stolen profiles.

I'd heard this was coming. The playing field just got leveled.

Yeah, but it takes some pretty deep pockets to initiate that kind of suit itself. Not something a dad-and-pop site like RJ could ever do.

The RJ site owners have very little or no incentive to eliminate fakes. It actually helps drive traffic to the site.

The fact that this site gets more visitors from India than the UK tells me that we have MANY fake profiles that are either scraping the site for content, or spamming members individually.

woodsmen said^ That has to be counterbalanced with whether non-fake profiles will leave. A new buyer will perform due diligence to see if there are many fake profiles leading to a termination of a sale. Once words get out, RJ will not be a valuable site for anyone to purchase.
LOL. Is this site worth anything? It's my understanding that this site changed owners 3 or 4 times already. It must be bleeding money.

LinkedIn is a very lucrative business related site, you've got established entities there that have good reason to be concerned about their data being stolen and the money to sue. A lot different than this site.

If it's bleeding money, why do they keep it up and running? I'm not arguing your point, I'm curious why the site is still here for us.

Dunno. Maybe they're waiting for the right deal to come along. I own a handful of domains. I'm not making money from them. Just paying the renewals. So technically, I'm losing money. But not losing enough to break the bank. My guess it's the same for RJ. They're willing to lose "x" amount of money until someone offers them a wad of cash.

YourName2000 saidI don't think RJ is losing money perse, but I do think revenues have declined to the point that they don't see a future in it.

I've said before: the owners treat RJ like a vending machine in the office...it's not their main business, but it brings in a little slush money. Enough to make it worth keeping, but not worth spending any money on.

And btw, you guys do know there is no "Real Jock Inc", right? --it's a fake entity, not registered in the county when I last checked. RJ is a side project under "Realaffinity Inc" (C2634047), an interior design company in San Fran. Not kidding on that.
LOL. No surprise. With the way this site is coded and maintained, it basically feels like someone's weekend project.

Yeah, the old Jeff was a different guy...

No, I meant the new Jeff "Customer Service" guy that xrichx linked to on FB. But apparently it isn't quite that simple because of the Mark Elderkin link.

That was the first Jeff's brother, I believe. He moved on to another fitness site a long time ago...not sure if it was *really* him who was answering for the last bit.

    You're correct on that.
