Help keep wrestling in the Olympics

Tried posting this thread last week but it hardly got any views, probably due to a poor choice of title. So I'm giving it another try.

A group of former coaches, wrestlers, and businessmen has formed an organization called the National Registry for Wrestlers, aimed at promoting wrestling in the US at the collegiate and international levels. They're acting primarily in response to wrestling almost being dropped from the Olympic Games (and it's still in jeopardy, since it's no longer considered a "core sport").

The first step of their plan is simply to build a database of wrestling fans, to show the world how many people are interested in the sport. "We are wrestlers, hear us roar" - that kind of thing. Their goal is to have a million names in their registry by the end of 2014. This is not a scam or a cheap marketing ploy. The Big Ten Network is solidly behind them.

If you want to help promote wrestling as a collegiate and Olympic sport (just by lending your name), you can sign up here:
    http://www.nationalregistry4wrestling.com/

You can also win T-shirts, hoodies and jackets by getting your friends to sign up! Just create a promo code for yourself when you join the registry, and have them enter it when they join. My promo code is denny321, in case you don't have anyone else's to enter...

(and nope, I'm not making this post in hopes of getting free stuff, but if they're giving it away I'll take it)

Oh, and... their website has a nice schedule of all collegiate wrestling TV broadcasts for this season. Mostly Big Ten Network and PAC-12 Network, but ESPN always covers the NCAA nationals in March.

Who doesn't want to see smokin hot, muscled-up college boys tussling on the mat?

The two most important sports at the Olympics are wrestling and swimming.
I'm anxiously awaiting the new Ryan Lochte.

WHY THE HELL WOULD THEY TAKE WRESTLING OUT OF THE OLYMPICS?! ARE THEY STUPID?!!
Wrestling is one of the oldest forms of sport, and has given the Olympics recognition throughout history.
To take this sport out is almost sacreligious!

Yep, it's partly about money, partly about lack of celebrity status, and partly because wrestling just doesn't fit in with the image that the effete Euro snobs who run the IOC want to project.

Look at NBC's Sochi coverage - you'd hardly think there were any men competing at the Winter Olympics at all! Everything is focused on attracting the female audience, because they know men will tune in the Olympics no matter what. And women don't want to see big muscular sweaty guys grinding it out on the mat. At London in 2012 they actually gave more coverage to women's wrestling (a brand new event with a very limited number of competitors) than to men's.

The IOC chose to add golf to the Olympics, which put wrestling in jeopardy (apparently they can only support so many sports, and nobody wanted to get rid of badminton or ping pong). They knew people would tune in to watch Tiger Woods win a gold medal. But who outside of the wrestling world can even name an Olympic wrestler?

That is the entire reason I watch!

True this! It really nauseating how NBC is so enamored of the female athletes. Don't they think females and gay guys want to see the men?

Agreed. It's even more ridiculous when you consider some of the newer sports being added to the summer games... :cough: ping-pong :cough:
