I don't want to give the impression that all beggars are actors, but it does make you wonder how many are sincerely in need of money.

It still won't stop me from helping someone I think is in need. If I'm wrong, I still get my reward of knowing I acted out of compassion, and they still get their punishment of knowing they're a bad person. You can't escape the intension of your actions when you lay your head on your pillow.

If you can swallow your pride, you can make good money begging.

Even hunched over on crutches she looked like she taught Pilates. Didn't anyone else notice?

No. In fact, I've never seen anyone able to walk bent over like that for an extended period of time, which led me to believe she really was crippled. I guess that's where the crutch came into play.

Of course she appears to be a Muslimah. She is just claiming a form of "jihad seeker's allowance" (google it) from the filthy kuffar swine. icon_rolleyes.gif

At least she was scamming on 5th avenue. People that can afford to shop at Gucci in NYC could give her a grand a day and wouldn't notice it was missing.

Many years ago, I knew someone that got kicked out of his house. Bad relationship with his parents. So he opted to be homeless until he figured out what to do. Panhandling is easy money. He used to make between $300 - $400 per day, holding a "Will work for food" sign at the freeway offramp. Plus, clothes, food, gift certificates at restaurants, cigarettes, etc. During the holidays were the more profitable, since everyone is in such a giving mood.

This is why we don't give handouts to people on corners holding signs. It could be a con. I hate to ignore some that may be in legitimate need of help, but how do you know them from the frauds?

So instead we donate to charity organizations we trust. In fact, we just had cocktails this afternoon with the CEO of the largest HIV/AIDS food bank in our area. I write him checks all the time, that I know are going to feed indigent people who pass a needs test, and to get them other kinds of assistance.

I'm not heartless, but I'm not stupid, either. Now that US politicians have raped many public assistance programs (I don't need to tell you to which political party they belong) it's up to ordinary citizens to step up. And my husband & I do. But not to people on corners holding signs.

Agreed. People shivering in cardboard boxes where they'll obviously spend the night I'd step over them into a coffee shop and bring out hot tea for them. That's it. I donate; if a percentage goes to overhead, so what; what's left definitely goes to those who need it.

I can't tell you how often in the '80s in New York I'd see blind beggars step over and around obstacles.

I dunno. Portland is full of 20-somethings who drove up here with no job and are living in their cars. They hang outside the trendy restaurants hoping that people will give them leftover on the way out. If I'm there, I'll usually hand my carry-out box to the first guy who wants it. Some of the guys playing guitar on the street, are a bit questionable.

One time back in the 70's, I was hanging out for an afternoon in Jackson Square, New Orleans. There were some kids in rags, begging from the tourists. I was there long enough to see them go into a rest room and come out in the newest disco threads. icon_rolleyes.gif

Sounds like he wasn't using his wheelchair right.

I'm riddled with arthritis, and other joint problems. Some years ago I took my BF at the time to NYC. We bought 10-day unlimited public transit passes, for buses & subways. A great deal, and we used them every day, the Manhattan subways today not the horror I remember in the 1960s.

So I'd get into the subway car with my cane, and WOMEN would get up to offer me their seats! WOMEN, for gawd's sakes! In New York City!

Of course I declined, with many thanks. I told them, truthfully, I was a tourist but former resident, and wouldn't miss the experience of being a subway "straphanger" again for all the world. A lovely gesture on their part, but can you realize how humiliated I felt to have WOMEN getting up to offer their seats to me?

When you get old & decrepit I think most of us, especially men, refuse to accept being old & decrepit. Or at least to knowingly act that way, and being identified that way. My late Mother hated to be in a wheelchair during her last years (also for arthritis, making me worried), and also in an electric scooter.

But thank heavens there's not a single case of senility in my entire family. Every one of them remained sharp as tacks into their 80s, remarkable people. And I'm hoping to be the first to reach his 90s. icon_biggrin.gif

My mother went through a short period of not being able to walk far so I used to take her shopping and get one of those shopping go karts for her. The only way I could get it to her would be to drive it out of the store, myself. As I drove by, people would look at me with a "Gee - and so young" look.
It was kind of horrible. icon_smile.gif

You could also google about the Bountiful BC mormon polygamists that call sucking up welfare, 'bleeding the beast'.

As long as none of the 50 wives lived with the husband they could each get welfare.
