    Hey fellas.

I will be taking my fella to Athens in about three weeks (mid January). We plan on spending 9 days in the city and 2-3 on one of the islands. Hydra most likely because I think an island without any automobiles is so cool. Can anyone make any suggestions or travel advice for Athens? I realize with the recent riots and protest this may not be the best time to travel Athens, but I like the added adventure. icon_biggrin.gif

    Thanks- G

9 days in Athens is an awful long time. Apart from the Plaka, the Parthenon and the Acropolis, there's not much to see in Athens. The rest of Athens is a modern, hectic and smoggy mess. It might be pushing it, but I would think you could "do Athens" in one day. I would use the rest of the time going to as many islands as possible. That's the real beauty of Greece. Although it's cliched and touristy, I would recommend Santorini and Mykonos. I also liked Ios and Naxos a lot. Northern Greece is great to. The area around Kalambaka and Meteora. It's like a completely different country. Of course, if you're already planning on doing some islands, it would be impossible to do north and south in 12 days. Have a great time and try to stay at the Plaka if you can!

Hey i was in Greece a couple of years ago. 9 days i think you'll find is too long. Two full days would do you, on day three get down to the ferry port as early as you can, jump on a ferry and head to some of the islands. Naxos, Mykonos or Paros are all reasonably close to each other so you could do a few days on each. It's quite easy (at least in summer) to pick up accomodation once you get off the boat. I think you might kick yourself if you hit the islands after 9 days in Athens - some of them are really stunning!

Obviously you should see the Parthenon and acropolis if you weren't already going to. The hike up the mountain is unique and you get a nice view of the city.

Also if you guys have time, go to a Bazukia (no idea how to spell it, sound it out and you'll find it easy) show. It's basically like a night club where people sit at tables, drink wine, and listen to performances till the morning and head off to work haha.

Other than that there are a ton of squares that you'll find throughout the town will little restaurants, I'd see if you could make it out on a road trip to the mountainous villages because it's a sight to see a village built into a mountain. Not to mention they all have their own little products they sell, normally food, that are organic and delicious.
