Strangely never got the lesbian vibe from her but it's always good when actors come out.

Not to take away from her making a bold move but isn't it easier for women to come out in Hollywood than guys ?

Define "easier." There's is no question that this will affect her career. When producers bring up her name for consideration for a part, her lesbian status will now be considered as a negative--for most parts--and will, in some cases, surely lead to a "pass." She's put her career on the line for this; how many other people have the courage to do the same?

ViciousRumor saidI could not tell she was gay. How are so many people not shocked?

She was too...I don't know. When you develop your gay radar, you can tell. She wasn't 'feminine' enough to me. She was also to talented for her young age, just like Jodie Foster, who's also a lesbian.

I also suspect Queen Latifah is a lesbo.

I can't say I called it, but if you look not only at _Hard Candy_ but the way she walks and moves in _Inception_, it's easy to see she's got a lot of boy in her. I also kept thinking as I watched this video that she reminded me of Justin Beiber--imagine that flat hair look cut short and you'll see it--not in terms of personality or character of course, but in terms of the overall physical impression. Together they stand on either side of the androgynous borderline. If JB could only recognize he's a lesbian trapped in a nubile adolescent boy body, he'd probably be a lot happier.

That's as bullshitty as claiming that you've got girl in you just because you like guys. This mindset from both of you and from the world at large is problematic. You don't have more or less 'girl' or 'boy' in you just because you like someone of the same sex. There are plenty of effeminate straight men, and there are plenty of hypermasculine non-heterosexual men. So what if someone "wasn't feminine enough" for you or has "a lot of boy" in them? There are also lesbians who tick all of the boxes of society's narrow-minded view of femininity.

We talk about the world needing to change the way they see us, but we clearly have plenty of work to do amongst ourselves if we ever want to be taken seriously...

i guess now she'll be seen as the total opposite to the overly sexualized puppets cyrus and bieber, who keep contributing to the perpetuation of the stereotypes Page talked about. & who are the worst of the worst when it comes to role models for teenagers etc

I thought it was a very sincere and moving speech.

I think a lot of the responses in this thread are nauseating in their unknowing irony given the content of her speech.

This did not surprise as how Ricky Martin coming out did not surprise me.
You could tell from the get go they were gay.
Anyway good on her, I hope she continues to get more roles in film.
