Okay what is the deal with this crazy "phenomenon"

People still go to theaters where they act out the movie in front of the screen. People sitting down are so crazy for it. All my friends went tonight and they're pissed that I wont go. When I said I hated that movie I got looks of death, like I was gay In the military. One guy even walked off and said I'm just a roid rangin meat head. So what If my excuse was that I hated it and can't skip leg day.

God damn! what the obsession with this movie, can't at least one guy hate it?

Finally ... someone else who thinks the same as me.

I still can't believe it's so popular that people continue to dress up and mimic the characters, buy and play the movie, continuously listen to and sing the music and now go to the musical.

I never got into the who Rocky Horror Picture Show and I'm glad I wasn't alive when it originally came out as I'd imagine it would've been massive then, as its still fairly big these days.

I thought it was gay as hell when I first heard about it.. turns out it IS super gay, but its a blast. I didn't dress up or anything but its such a fun experience, everyone needs to do it at least once.

I played Dr. Frankenfuter in a production of it.
But no, I am not a fan at all.
It was one of those: I'm an actor and I need experience and something on my resume things.
And the fishnets are itchy as hell.

OMG - I love it! OK - hate to say this but showing my age here - I've been watching Rocky Horror since 1982...

I was a freshman in college and saw my first showing in a converted funeral parlor... loved it! Onslaught - you would make the perfect Rocky! icon_twisted.gif

It is sublime, timeless and anarchic. As a wide-eyed litle freak in South Africa I managed to cajole my dad into taking me. But that same Saturday afternoon those Calvinist bastards at the censor board banned it. I had to settle for the album and wait many long years before seeing it in all it's brilliance.

    Whatever happened to Fay Wray
    That delicate satin draped frame
As it clung to her thigh
    How I started to cry
Cause I wanted to be dressed just the same
Give yourself over to absolute pleasure
    Swim the warm waters
    Of sins of the flesh
    Erotic nightmares beyond any measure
    And sensual day-dreams
    To treasure forever
    Can't you just see it
    Whoa-ho ohhh

and you skipped this for 'leg day'?????

I've seen bits of it on tv, and and it looks like a fun movie. And I do one day want to see the whole thing from start to finish one day. But yeah, I didn't understand the "obsession" with it.

It sucks... and in my opinion its one of the reasons people think all gay people are flamming sex fiends.

NakedDevil I skipped the show and went to the gym, I was all alone.

Gays were portrayed as fey, sick or fiends way before this movie came out! I did not understand the obsession when I went to my only midnight showing of this movie in college. I do like a few of the songs. It's just personal choice. Some people (gay and straight) thought that Brokeback Mountain was the most boring movie of all time while others felt it was an instant classic.

I have seen it 42 times in a theater, own it on disk, and have the original record (LP). It is a cult classic, and if you don't like, you don't get it!

Onslaught, I think you need some perspective.

First, alot of us are flamming sex fiends. icon_twisted.gif

Second, this was put out at a time when a) color television was fairly new, b)cable tv was new (we just had three channels prior to cable), c) beta max and VHS were battling for supremecy as recorded media and d) there was no internet.

You could only see this on tv if you were lucky enough to have a color television and had subscribed to this special 'cable' service and were watching it way late at night. It was shown in theatres way late at night also because of content. Before Rocky there just had never been that amazing Red on the screen and of all things it was a set of hot lips in super-close-up singing totally contrasted against the pitch black background.

Society made it naughty and a dirty little adventure to see such a sexy show.

Third, its a musical version of Frankenstein with adult sexual themes throughout. (Read that line again) So if you like horror, sex and music - it's a pretty neat show and avante garde classic.

Fourth - you share alot in common with Dr Frankenfurter - your main focus in life is making the perfect MAN. Only he's does it with alot more tears, make-up, fishnet and rhythm.

I love RHPS! I used to go around 1980 at the old Exeter Street Theatre in Boston. It was probably the first time that I got the sense of breaking out of my suburban mindset and the freedom was intoxicating. This was far before I came out too.

I went about 10 years ago to see it at Harvard Square, and (of course) all the lines you yell at the screen were different, because the cultural references were different. People were really looking at me funny, like when I said during "Toucha, toucha, touch me" when Rocky goes underneath Janet's legs "This is a good place for a Stick-Up!" icon_smile.gif

Its like any other thing its not for every one. I could say the same thing about football, whats up with those crazy fucking people in the parking lots in freezing weather with no shirts on all painted up like their fav team. Same thing, different strokes for different folks. I've lost count of how many times I've seen RHPS its campy corny and fun, I've burned out 3 or 4 tapes of the sound track and finally got it on cd.

"Phenomenons" do not last over 30 years. This is a cult thing. Accept it or ignore it. Big clue: See it in a theatre. You may have some fun.
