I'm back in COLLEGE! Sort of...

I just enrolled for classes at University of Michigan, which is odd because I graduated from Michigan State 29 years ago. Once again, I forgot where my locker is, what classes I'm taking, the locations and times of those classes, and the required materials.

Somehow I get clued in that I'm enrolled in some sort of creative writing/horticulture class. I'm standing at a checkout desk with two books in my hand. An old lady with glasses looks over the books carefully, then back up at me. Did I get the wrong ones? I wonder. One of the books has an outdoor garden on the cover; the other is smaller, nondescript, more analytical, I think. The lady asks if I have a fake ID. No, but I have a real one, I reply. I pull out my license. She looks around the store, then leans in and points to a tag on her lapel. It's the silouette of a little girl with a ponytail made from carefully placed pinholes. No, you'll need a fake ID, for that book, for your imagination, she says. It's full of wonderful stories that will take you places.

I back away a few inches, then look at the book. Nothing registers as I flip through the pages. What I see is page after page filled with glossy flower photos. Am I missing something? She tallies the two books and it comes to $32. Thirty-two dollars! I wonder if I can afford the books; maybe they're not even the right ones. I reluctantly pull out my credit card and pay for the large book, leaving the smaller $5 book behind. She points to a campus garden map and says "you'll want to start here." At this point I'm sickened that I just spent $25 for a book I'm not sure I need, but I listen anyway.

Now I'm carrying large backpacks on an unfamilar campus with a new major wondering why I didn't just go back to MSU to get a Masters in Engineering. One more year is all it would have taken. But I can't wait to tell all my MSU friends that I'm back in college. Surprisingly, the MSU campus is within walking distance from where I'm at, so I make my way through a few side streets where I'll reunite with them at the old dorms.

That was the dream I just woke up from.

In my own dreams of that sort I'm usually also naked.

In that case I hope the person at the checkout is a hunky guy, instead of a little old lady with glasses.

Dreams can be crazy. I'm glad I wrote it down.
