I just googled him on Wikipedia. He's about 65 years old now. I'm surprised he's still alive, considering the social circles he moved in. He's supposedly managing an apartment building in L.A. now. He's been married three times, and he's got 2 kids. Honestly, though, I wouldn't consider him a gay icon.

    Who is he?

    David Bowie?

Are you kidding ? David Bowie working as an apartment-building manager ? Give me a break. Actually, the guy MikeW posted up above is someone you've never even heard of. He had his 15 minutes of fame a long time ago, and that was it.

    WE HAVE A WINNER!!

carew28 certainly has a point. However, Joe Dallesandro was a sexually ambiguous "actor" ( icon_redface.gif ) made famous (for a bit over 15 minutes) by Andy Warhol in such films as "Flesh," "Trash," and "Lonesome Cowboys."

Little Joe never once gave it away (according to a Lou Reed lyric), but he made the most of what he had:

SO, to me icon_biggrin.gif THAT is a one hell of a GAY ICON icon_wink.gif

Yeah, I forgot Alan Turning. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't be having this conversation. I like Ben Cohen too.

I am so out of the loop I didn't even know we had gay icons. Look at this; there's a whole wiki on it

Hmmm, apparently, outside of Marlon Brando, the main criteria is that you have a vagina.

John Barrowman. I'm surprised no one has said Elton John, James Franco, or Rick Mercer yet though.

Definitely Joe Dallesandro. Like several of the great Warhol Superstars, he moved on the outer wings of Hollywood, but it was really the Underground and the Italians who got him best. Certainly not a flash-in-the-pan.

Wow. This is the most confusing thread I've ever seen. Half of these people aren't self identified as gay and it unclear if gay icon means "an icon to the gay community" (like garland) or a cultural icon who is actually gay or a cultural icon who is actually gay and championed the cause of gays. The only thing I feel sure of is that Elvira doesn't fit any of these definitions!
