Signed by the Brooklyn Nets for a 10 day contract...I guess better than nothing but it this a media ploy by the Nets to fill up Barclays Arena?

...and he's playing right now! Congratulations. Hope he enjoys this 10-day contract whether it lasts beyond that or not.

((Copying my comments from another (non-RJ) forum: ))

Jason Collins with the most Jason Collins-y boxscore line tonight against whatever's left of the Lakers:

10.5 minutes, 0 points, 0-for-2 shooting, 1 offensive rebound, 1 defensive rebound, 1 steal, 2 turnovers, 5 fouls... BUT... the most important part for any bench scrub... +8 on the plus-minus, as the Nets won.

We used to joke that the answer to "What is Jason Collins good for, anyway?" was "Up to 6 fouls that the better teammates don't have to commit."

Also, should note here that Collins was a center, in his first two NBA seasons, in the playoff runs for Jason Kidd's then-New Jersey Nets in their 2 back-to-back Eastern Conference Championships (J-Kidd coaches the Nets, now in Brooklyn), starting in the 2002-03 season and the 2003 Finals when the Nets lost 4 games to 2.

He has played before with Nets teammate Joe Johnson (with the Atlanta Hawks, a couple playoff seasons there... known as the "Dwight Stopper" for help the Hawks eventually overcome Howard's Orlando Magic team), and the Boston Celtics for part of a season (Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett).

Injured Nets star Brook Lopez, whose season-ending injury precipitated their need for a center, followed Collins through Stanford University: both played together with their respective TWIN brothers there (Jarron Collins is retired; Robin Lopez is with the Portland Trail Blazers).

Nets owner Mikhail Prohorov, one of the 10 wealthiest men on the planet, had pro-LBGT human rights issues on his platform when he ran against Vladimir Putin for President of Russia in 2012. He said while running, with Drago-style simplicity: ""It is a personal affair who has sex with whom."

Ya, good analysis. Collins' job is to commit fouls when needed for the Nets. Didn't know that about Prohorov. Interesting timing with Sochi going on.

So did the world end when this happened? I'm sure I missed it because I know that it could not have been just another day on the courts….what, a gay man place pro basketball…no way! How wrong is that, no one will EVER go watch that team!

Oh the nay sayers must be all up in arms today….. icon_eek.gificon_eek.gif

YourName2000 saidWow! Is anyone as surprised as I am that the two pro/near-pro football players that are out are black? --anecdotally, it seems that homophobia is more ingrained within the black community, so I'm surprised. And glad.

The both look like fantastic ambassadors for all of us.

    Congrats!
Agreed! It's like double-victory. Because they are black the impact is twice as great. Once for the impact on the sports community. And again for the impact on the black community. And to top it off they're such great guys and good sportsmen.

Good article, and good point to note Glenn Burke, "The Inventor of the High Five".

Maybe the victory can be about dispelling the myth that the black community is any more homophobic than any other community. Anecdotes are not data, and racism isn't always straightforward. There is no reliable evidence to show that the black "community" is any more homophobic than the rest of the world. By saying that it is, you're ignoring that white people actually have several homophobic media outlets, giant evangelistic religious organisations, and white-dominated governments on all levels bringing in homophobic laws.
