Sometimes a Banana Is Just a Banana Question

I used to like to include bananas in my diet, mainly putting them in the blender with other fruit/protein for a shake. However, because of their high glycemic count, I eliminated bananas. But I know bananas have other health benefits so unless I decide to lose massive amounts of body fat -- I range between 12-15% and weight 175-180 and work out about 4-5 times per week -- am I doing more harm than good in terms of nutrition by getting rid of the bananas? Or is it best to avoid the sugar no matter what?

Bananas do have a high glycemic count. I tend to stay aways from them. They are great for potassium though. So before I go to a concert or have to do some aural training I eat one.

I think you could have an occasional banana as part of your after workout snack and be ok.

There's an article on this site somewhere singing the praises of bananas....

I think they're great. If you like them, eat them. If you're super worried about the "glycemic count" eat half of one.

    Banana's are JUST FINE.

Lose the simple and refined sugars. Stick to small meals and eat often and you'll keep your body from wanting to hang on to fat.

Right after a workout you want a high-glycemic food like a banana to replace the glycogen you just worked so hard to destroy. So, I always pack a protein drink and a piece of fruit with me to the gym.

    enjoy.
