People need to get over what Paula Deen said, she apologized, so it's time to move on.

I'm pretty sure most people are guilty of making a racist comment or at least thinking something racist, no one is perfect as far as that sort of thing goes.

ARTICLE: "I feel like 'embattled' or 'disgraced' will always follow my name. It's like that black football player who recently came out," says Deen, referring to NFL prospect Michael Sam. "He said, 'I just want to be known as a football player. I don't want to be known as a gay football player.' I know exactly what he's saying."

    She still doesn't get it.

I couldn't agree more, and this very thread is proof that she was right.

She recently raised $75 million to launch her new venture since being dumped by Food Network and most of her sponsors. She's playing the sympathy card all the way to the bank and being financed by the slime that think her racism is nothing to get mad about. (I have an additional gripe that is unrelated but I'm personally offended that my home city of Savannah is smeared by her bigotry and low rent personality and sickly cooking.)

I'm going to go against the grain here.
I know some other Southern women who are not remotely racist who've let some awful things come out of their mouths without thinking. If childhood indoctrination can make someone believe in God, why can't the same be true of racism? The point isn't whether she did horrible things---she's paid a large price for those. The point is whether she actually did learn something from it.

Meantime, the hypocritical Food Network continues to showcase that disgusting homophobe Guy Fieri. I don't think they have any moral high ground either.

If it were a single careless comment, yes, I would agree with you. But she was revealed to have had a long history of not only comments, but racist actions. And she still hasn't fessed up to that, continuing to play the innocent victim. Sorry, no deal. Check, please!

Agreed, that's the heart of the issue. I think her most recent statements suggest she hasn't. Time will reveal the truth.

But if I've learned anything it's that people change, and I change. And that I can be wrong.

You & I became good friends IRL, along with my husband. Who would have imagined that last year? Your initiative, but I do claim some small credit for going along.

So who knows about Paula Dean? My husband remains a big fan & supporter of hers, a hot topic I know not to raise with him.

As for myself, I think she's racist trailer trash, plain & simple. Excuses about upbringing & community are all fine, but she's a big girl now (a VERY big girl), so time she gets with the program.

And stops playing the victim. I haven't heard her actually apologize yet, in any significant way. So I remain skeptical, but always open to reconsideration.

∆ This. People are so hypocritical it's pathetic. And what she said in the link had zero racist overtones in the least. Learn to forgive and move on. Everyone who gets offended these days wants to see bloodshed.

She's a trip, harmless. Honestly, I think white people are more upset with her than "blacks" are. I just find her amusing. Annoying, but amusing.

I like what Prof. Yoshino said yesterday on Rachel's show.

The woe-is-me bigot-victimization appeals are based on this very simple argument:

How is it that Paula Deen ISN'T back if she got 75 million in investments now? She has tons of people who still like her and will buy her stuff. Vick was and still is criticized for what he did and so will Deen be. I don't know what you're saying.

She doesn't have her show back and people are threatening to kill her. And what do investments have to do with a person's career? Meanwhile Michael Vick has his job back and is making millions off his clothing line.

The things she says reflect more on her than on anyone she's talking about. White people who use the n word always look bigoted to someone. Even if you "didn't mean to sound racist" (sob) it's like sitting on a whoopee cushion. Doesn't matter if you brought pie, everyone's clearing the room. And then she cries about how unfairly she's being treated, and saying that people are being intolerant of her, like she's a gay athlete???icon_confused.gif Uuum, hello, she was planning a Jim Crow style wedding like she's in the KKK! People want to other themselves from the very spirit of whatever she was going for. Basically, she's an embarrassment, and as celebrity she's become a pariah to many people.

The thing about Paula Deen's firing is this, ratings for her show had declined and she simply wasn't making as much money for the network as before, so the whole racist issue was just an excuse for Food Network to get rid of Deen. Had she still be pulling in the ratings and advertisement dollars as before, no way Food Network would have fired her. Guy Fieri was caught on video assaulting someone and he is still employed there, starring on at least four shows, so it's all about the money.

ProTip: anytime someone screeches... "Why do black people get to have all the fun and not people like MEEEEEEE?" Just say, "Because Middle Passage, duh!" and move on! icon_twisted.gif
