Why are elevators terrifying?

I think elevators are the worst invention (not literally, I'm being hyperbolic). I've been stuck twice (a few years ago, and yesterday). The first time I was alone, and the lights were out and I had to use my cell phone for light. The second time it was crammed with a bunch of guys (in hindsight it sounds like a porn but the guys were straight and it wasn't fun at all). I'm ONLY clausterphobic in elevators. Packed clubs, concerts, cars, buses, subway cars, restaurants, bars, airplanes...absolutely nothing else bothers me. Just elevators.

Every time we're only going up a few floors I suggest we take the stairs because I don't trust elevators, and my friends act like it's no big deal and that I'm being nuts and am the only person terrified of these moving coffins. Perhaps I am, but if it's less than 5 floors, I almost always take the stairs if I can. I even requested a 3rd floor apartment in Miami instead of a penthouse because I wanted to take the stairs daily.

Am I the only person who feels like every elevator is going to get stuck or are there others who experience the same feeling? I think I need some aversion therapy or Dr. Phil or holy water. Is it just me?

Not just you. However, I've never been stuck in one. It is irrational but I just don't like them and avoid them whenever possible. I even have nightmares about them (recurring), again for no obvious reason.

Good to hear I have some guys I can take the stairs with.

Umm, these videos are going to help my quads and calves, because I won't be taking elevators for the next few months icon_twisted.gif

Here's one elevator ride that would definitely bother me.

How about MRI machines, small closets and coffins? Do you feel enclosed in those places? If yes, then it's not the elevator but your claustrophobia that's the issue.

I've never been in an MRI machine or coffin, but small closets don't scare me at all, and I get no apprehension when I think about being trapped in a MRI machine or coffin. I wouldn't like it, but it doesn't bother me like thinking about an elevator. Hmm.

    Diagnosis: Nuts.

^^^ In that case, I don't suggest visiting the Empire State Building, Sears Tower or the Space Needle anytime soon.

Because you might get locked up (naightmare if youre claustrophobic) or even worse, fall. Even if its not likely to happen there is still that irrational fear, just like with planes.

4 words: TERR I FY ING

King's novel is even scarier because they ride the elevator, and it gets stuck at the end between floors!

There was a movie made where a group of people were stuck in an elevator and the devil was with them.

Yeah, for me it isn't the small spaces, it is the movement, especially going down. I don't like escalators much either, tbh. None of this rises to the level of a full blown phobia. I do take elevators as needed. But there is something about vertical motion that is unsettling, regardless of the conveyance. I don't like Ferris wheels or gondolas, either although I'm fine with roller coasters. *shrug*

What about those old elevators where it's an open platform and they're constantly going up and you step on one as it comes by and step off when it goes by your floor? What happens if you're going to the top floor and you space out and don't step off?

    Does that exist? So scary.
I don't like elevators, especially the ones in old buildings in Paris. They look very good but are so tiny. Once I got blocked in one and I could barely sit inside it waiting for the company to get me out.
I live on 7th floor but almost never take the elevator. I often have nightmares about elevators.

I once read a statistic that elevators are the safest form of transportation on Earth, based on the number of people they carry daily versus the number of injuries to passengers.

I heard a story about a woman and her young son got on a crowded elevator. It had a vibration, and her son says out loud "this tickles my penis"!!!
It took a while for the laughter to subside.

According to Montgomery Burns, the blood usually gets off on the 3rd floor.
