I used to visit Houston while stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana. From what I remember there were quite a few Gold's Gym and World Gym locations throughout the city and its suburbs. Houston was becoming quite a bodybuilding mecca in the 1990s and early 2000s. I don't know if that is still true today. When I visited Houston numerous times while in the Army, I would work out at a World Gym on Richmond Avenue and Post Oak Blvd. near the Galleria Area. I don't know if it still exists today given the transient nature of gyms and health clubs.

longhorn1976 saidMoving to Houston this spring and looking for a good gym to join. Needs to be clean, good equipment, safe locker room, don't want my stuff getting stolen, lol, and not too crazily priced, lol.

24 hour fitness in Rice Village is clean, safe, and jn a neat neighborhood. The one on Richmond (Galleria) is also nice. Lifetime fitness on Holcombe in Med center and the one on Richmond are also great. There are also a few smaller, privately owned gyms that are great to go to. I visited a few of them, but I'll have to see where they were again! Sometimes those smaller gyms are really great. I'll get back to you about them.

if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Been in Houston since the dawn of time, aka 24 yrs.

LOL. No, that was a reference to a running gag in the forums. Some guy here likes to brag that he belongs to a $79 a month gym. icon_lol.gif

It's the Downtown Y. Very new facility, with the usual Y assortment of facilities, including lap pool, racketball, basketball, etc., and well-equipped weight room on the top floor with a great skyline view (in contrast to the old downtown Y where the weight room was in the basement).
Mixed professional crowd, some gays but not all that many.
Only real downside is very limited parking.
I'd go there except that it's on the opposite end of downtown from where I work.

It really depends on where in town you will be. I lift at the 24 Hour Fitness in Midtown (just south of downtown). There is another one called Houston Gym that gets very high marks.
