Having gone to ND, this is a BIG deal. Super conservative place. You can tell by his comments that he is still struggling to accept himself, and at Notre Dame, he's not going to have the easiest time.

Based on his comments and the groups he is going to be a part of or participate in, I think he has come a very long way. He has gotten past is parent/family conversation but more importantly, he has won battles against himself. All while attending a Roman Catholic university.

Also an ND alum here from 2000.

This is a massive step forward and I hope that the university also sees that they need to support LGBT students in a better way so that they don't end up in the circumstances that he luckily escaped.

I have the most conservative of friends from ND and what has been incredible is that when they realised that I was just me before and after coming out, it stopped mattering...

Good for him. Good for us. Surprising how quickly this is seeming almost quaint. But yet it is still a personal journey most of us must make and that may not change for a long while. You still have to deal with the ramifications of altered expectations, especially personally.

Good for him! Wishing him all the very best! I hope he learns to love who he is, what he is and who he may become. With today's technology he may very well be able to father children. If that is so important to him, he should look into it.

    Great article.
Great forehand form in the pic.
Also went to a Catholic university for two years.
    Thanks for posting this.
Here's to a world where a fine guy, and tennis player, NEVER again considers committing suicide because he's gay.

Impressive serve -- pronation, non-dominant arm placement, and launch off the ground.

Would "love" to see him make it to the top 100 (at least) pro players, if that's what he wants to do, as a great gay role model.

    DG1990: More pics please.

Good idea. Let's hope that we see a lot more of him.

Matt Dooley's ND Tennis Roster head shot.

And his profile at the Notre Dame Men's Tennis site:

ND recently lost to my alma mater in tennis. If Dooley had played in the match I would have rooted for ND.
