I was just wondering how many people (other than me) actually consider volleyball to be the best sport ever invented, and if so why?

    My answer:
Yes, and I <3 Volleyball because: almost anyone can learn to play it(if they devote themselves), you can get down and dirty and still be playing "nice", and it's a wonderful excuse for flailing your arms around! Oh, and it's just a really fun way to stay active and healthy.

I like two things about volleyball:
1). It's a skill sport, like tennis. You don't have to be the most genetically gifted athlete to be good at it.
2). There are multiple positions (no jokes) that cater to different body types/playing styles, all in one sport. If you're aggressive, be a hitter. Like finesse and deception? Be a setter. Even in a sport where height is so important, with the introduction of the libero position, short guys who are strong passers can be important members of a volleyball team. There's so much variety in this sport, it's like 3 sports in 1.

It's by far my favorite team sport, but I'm not sure how I'd rank it in comparison to sports like tennis and racquetball. I like that there are a lot of different skills needed, and that you rotate through the positions during a match so it's really best to be at least passable at all of them. I like that it's a sport where there aren't huge gender disparities--while guys are generally better spikers and blockers, girls are often better at setting the ball, so a mixed gender team will often do just as well as an all men's team, at least at the recreational level. I like that it can be played among a wide range of number of players, from 2 on 2 to 6 on 6.

It is one of my favourite sports to play. I play in a rec. league in Toronto. My favourite sport overall though is hockey with baseball second.

It is definitely a sport I love to watch and am a fan of. I'd choose going to a vball game over most other sports games any day.

    It is my favorite sport.

One of the things I love about volleyball is that it really requires great teamwork.

This game is my life and has been for the past 7 years. There is nothing like a sport with such close proximity to your teammates involving communication. It is not only a great sport to sculpt your body from the waist down, but it really keeps you thinking and on your toes.

Favorite sport to play is volleyball.

    To watch, however, it's football.

For me, its a tie between Volleyball (especially outdoor/beach volley) and Football (Soccer).

They are both sports that require nothing more than a ball and team spirit. Clothing, footwear and nets aren't even essential to either game -- a rope strung between two trees or some oil drums suffice -- as witnessed by their wide-spread popularity around the world, even in the most impoverished corners of the globe. Absolutely no gladiator paraphernalia required.

Have ball, can play -- at any ritzy beach resort or dusty shantytown.

LOVE VB and all different aspects of it!

I had a huge break of 8 years without real sport activity and returned to volleyball ... probably one of very few team sports where such thing is possible.

Its definitely my favorite sport, been playing it since 6th grade. There are so many different aspects to the game, it really is a TEAM sport in the fact that you NEED everyone to contribute in order to be a well balanced and overall good team. Another thing I like is how egotistical it is, talking shit b/t points after a kill or stuff just gets me pumped. And finally its such an underrated sport that I'd like for anyone who thinks that volleyball isn't as hardcore as some of the more "contact" sports to have a 7"0 some odd guy hit a 70-80 mph rubber ball at your face.

jr878, i totally agree. a LOT of people have no idea how much skill and effort and endurance volleyball requires.

clearly they have not been mowed down by a ball going 60 mph thanks to an outside hitter with a wicked arm.

oh, and i heard this fantastic line from one of those said people, "Volleyball's not a sport, it's not on ESPN"

I love volleyball as a team sport, and it's especially fun to play on the beach, but my favorite sport of late has become racquetball. It's fiercely competitive, and you workup a great sweat and it's an awesome workout.
