metta8 saidHouse backs bill to sue president for not enforcing federal laws, such as DOMA
Apparently a Republican Congress had no problems with President Bush doing the same thing, to the point of attaching "signing statements" to bills he signed, stating what parts of the new law he wouldn't enforce right from the beginning. But that was OK if a Republican President did it.
And in the case of DOMA (about which Republicans are obsessed, in their all-out hatred of gays), Obama was acting on a legal opinion by US Attorney General Holder that DOMA is unconstitutional. An opinion partly vindicated by the US Supreme Court, when it subsequently struck down Section 3, despite Republicans in Congress wasting tens of millions of dollars to defend DOMA before the courts. The same Section 3 specifically dealing with the Federal government that Obama was not enforcing.
So are the Republicans giving themselves the authority to sue Obama for not enforcing a law that's already been ruled unconstitutional? This is pure political grandstanding, wasting the time of the Congress while pressing issues are ignored.
