Alcohol = fun?

This is something that I have been able to relate to. I have drink occasionally when I was in high school and university years, and only minimally. I have stopped drinking for many years now, just a personal choice.

I have not understood how parties are more fun with alcohol, with drinking games (I mean heavy drinking).
To me it seems people get hollow-headed, do irresponsible things, throws up and have hangovers, none of which are desirable or "fun". I do understand alcohol can help you relax, but other than, what other benefits are there in a social setting?

It is more an excuse people uses to do thing that are too afraid to own up.

This is my opinion only. People have different views on this and I would like to understand what your perspectives are.

Edit: I should clarify - I am referring to social/party drinkers, not people addicting to alcohol. I am sure you have thrown a party, and the first question asked is "Who's bringing the booze"?, or people who say "What fun is a party without alcohol?"

I enjoy alcohol in social settings for a few reasons. The first is that it tastes good (to me anyway, and I understand that some people may not enjoy how it tastes). A cold beer on a hot day or a nice glass of wine with a meal is just enjoyable for the fact that the flavor is nice and it's refreshing. Secondly, alcohol also lowers your inhibitions a bit, so uptight squares like me can be more open, have good conversations with friends, and be generally looser and more relaxed. Third, the lightheaded, euphoric feeling that you get from drinking (that buzz everyone talks about) is also enjoyable. Having a few and calling it a night can make a night feel more fun. Drinking in excess, though, and the consequences of it, are not. Each person has their own threshold for where the fun ends, though.

I come from a family with a history of substance abuse so I understand how precarious the situation with drinking can become, and knowing yourself and your limits is important.

-you drink 1/2 liter of the vodka in a weekend at home, your a drunk ck out an AA meeting
    -etc...

I just don't see the appeal in alcohol. I think going out and socially drinking is fine (not going overboard), but when your life revolves around it it's a huge issue.

    Everything in moderation, even moderation.

My drug of choice is cannabis, not alcohol. I don't like the taste of alcohol, I don't like how it makes me feel, and I don't like being around people who are drunk. I don't mind people who have 'a drink or two' and to be polite I sometimes will have one myself, but, to me, 'fun' it isn't. (Expensive and kind of ghastly, tbh.)

I'm not a big 'stonner' either. I know how to adjust my cannabis consumption so it 'fits' with whatever I'm doing. In a social situation a hit or two and that is it for me. It both excites and relaxes me and tends to make me a bit more 'open' and 'chatty' than I usually am. OTH, if I smoke too much I tend to get introverted and a tad paranoid, so I'm careful to not do that.

I just don't see the appeal in cannibals either. It really does nothing for me except make me very drowsy and hungry.

Edit: Biggest typo ever, but I'm keeping it. icon_lol.gif

LOL… had to read it four times to see it.

I suspect, josh, you just haven't learned 'how' to get high. I know that sounds weird but my experience is there is a learning process involved. Very difficult to explain. I know, although I liked it from the very first, I didn't really 'get' it until I'd gotten stoned several times. But you're right, not everyone has the same experience with it. Some people do just fall asleep. That's what happens to me if I drink a glass of wine. I just nod out!

That's pretty interesting, actually! I've tried it a handful of times and it always ends up going this way for me:

    1.) Take a hit
    2.) Cough up lungs
    3.) I swear guys I'm not crying
    4.) I really am crying. CAN'T BREATH
    5.) Mellowed out
6.) "You guys have chips right? I'll take 4 bags plz"
7.) "You guys ever wonder... like... when you see strangers they have a story just like we do, but we'll never know it."
    8.) ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

    -drive too fast?
-drink coffee like 1000mg of caffeine a day?
-insult other people cuz it makes you feel good?
-dress bad, smell even worse, no one wants this for you
    ...

LOL… actually #7 is where its at. How to stay in that inquisitive, stoney, free-associativ state. Maybe have a mocha (hot chocolate, steamed milk and coffee) so the caffeine won't let the insulin rush from the carbs shut down your brain LOL!!

Drink too much too fast and you'll over share, but having a drink or two with someone is one of the best ways to get to know them because it allows you to let your guard down a little bit, which makes you a little bit vulnerable.

I've only ever taken part in a drinking game once, and thought it was utterly shit. You're trying to concentrate on an activity while drinking, which means you lose and have to down more of your drink and get wasted. I like drinking because I like to savor the taste and drink it at my own pace, not play a game where the rules determine whether I take a swig or not and how much I'm supposed to consume, fuck that.

And shots of sambuca/after shock/whatever? Never saw the point in that. Just downing something while you're already drinking something else because it makes you look hard. I don't think it's impressive.

Nicely put. I'm with you on this. I enjoy the taste and having that relaxed feel. I too am very careful but I can also hold my liquor well, unlike my bf whom I'm reminding regularly to drink water between cocktails!

Also, if I'm out at a concert, club, etc. it puts me in the mood to dance.

Weed just makes me feel really depressed to be honest. I smoked it a lot in early high school and it just makes me become really withdrawn in social situations. I overanalyze people, things, and it's just too much of a clusterfuck for me. Not to mention I feel really stupid because people will be talking to me and I wouldn't be able to follow along with the conversation because I'd forget what they were talking about a minute before.
