This is a link to news about the increase in violence against gays and lesbians. The lesbian woman mentioned in the story was picked out by her attackers simply because she had a rainbow sticker on her car!

I have a gay pride tattoo on the back of my neck. Maybe I should start carrying a baseball bat for protection.

I have an HRC sticker on my truck and .40 cal stainless steel Beretta in my shoulder holster. I would hate to use it but will if comes down to protecting myself or my partner...I would.

I carry a weapon pretty much at all times and as former military and former law enforcement I know how to use it.

So if the Religious Right is all about hating the sin and not the sinner, where's their outrage at these violent crimes against another human?

    Grumble...grumble....grumble....

They'll get theres when their time comes, God will dump their sinner ass into hell.

And Sparkycat, if your proud of who you are, you don't need to hide it. We shouldn't have to hide who we are because of fear. Yes, our life maybe in danger but that doesn't mean we're gonna take it. Nope, we can dish it to them as well, a fist up the ass without the lube!

gays are beaten up for 4 reasons:
    - the aggressor did not know they were gay and just wanted to beat up someone and the gay was available
    - the aggressor wanted to win easily and gays (think faggots) are known to be limp wristed and easy to beat
    - the aggressor wanted anyone who could be cut out of the herd as being different - gays are a socially acceptable victim group, whereas for example guys in wheel chairs are not.
    - the aggressor has a personal problem with others being gay either because of repressed feelings, religous feelings, or a bad experience.

in all these cases it is likely that if gays had the same reputation as hells angels or los angeles gangs for random violence, they would be left strictly alone by all aggressors. so take to wearing "make my day" "wanna fight?" t shirts and solve the problem.

The problem IS ... is that this rhetoric of love the sinner "hate" the sin

    is the problem
You can't have a second class citizenry here in the Untied States
or anywhere in the world for that matter
if you don't treat a group as EQUAL there is bound to be violence against them

I think that a lot of the conservative talk show hosts, tacitly give approval to violence and hate against those that are different. The Republican party has done little or nothing to silence these people, so therefore I think they are also implicated. They do not want to make any waves in the fear that they may lose a few votes from the bigoted, uneducated, insecure people who they feed upon.

withHonor is right. I'm religious, but I try to treat everyone with love. God will judge those people according to how they judge others on earth. That's my belief.

Ya know, you don't need a weapon, or a lethal weapon at that, to fight off the wolves

To ward off violence - my theory is to just look and act confidently - don't ever come off as a victim or in any way weak or effete. I'm not saying get as big as Chuckystud or anything - but just stand tall - take no shit from guys who mean you harm. Be nice to everybody - but be on alert somewhat for that rare occurance of possible violence.

Yep ...hard to tell if there is a rise in these incidents, or just an increase in the reporting violent attacks on GLBT ' s.... Ma bey, as suggested, there is just more reporting of it as gay people feel more more empowered with changing laws and seeming increases in support and acceptance. I think there is more than we see actually...and not all gets reported! I have long been (often to the point of being criticized and disliked by other gay men even!), that we all need to get off our namby pamby asses and demand that we be respected and allowed to fee safe as other people do...Personally i never took shit from no one ..I have been attacked and bashed many times and the more it happened the more i have fought against it...U have to make friends and family and the public in general aware of how we r often treated. There r str8 people out there who wouldn't kick a dog cause they see themselves as "good people" but they wouldn't think twice about insulting, working against, or even beating a fag! Further more i think all the lovely" fit into suburbs" and "live quietly amonsgt the str8's with my head in the sand homos" are as much a part of the problem as the people who break bones or kill homos! Allways report violent acts against u to the police and, whenever u can, make sure these people serve time for their crimes. B loud and visible when it comes to demanding that justice on ur part is served. Also important is the education of those u meet and know is aware of how bad this problem is. To b silent or to ignore this problem makes u as much to blame for it as those who direct the blows or use weapons of emotional, mental, or physical abuse.

It sucks but it's all the more reason to take up a martial arts or self defense class. That way you have the confidence in the knowledge that you CAN effectively defend yourself, if necessary.

Is the US concentrating on the demographics and psychographics of the perpetrators? Because if they are, then you'll find out WHOM the gays should be going after for all this violence.

Carry pepper spray, and if someone gives you shit, say "commeer betch, I'll spray yo face with mace."
