Gunshots Reported Where We Are Right Now!!!!

The police have shut down the roads outside, helicopters are overhead, and we are hearing reports of an armored gunman with a bomb, who's shooting up the Wilton Manors City Hall! (Wilton Manors adjoins Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

City Hall workers have come up the street to where we are, sheltering in the bar where we are, just past the police roadblock. The same bar I recently mentioned in another RJ thread about our St. Patrick's Day activities.

We don't have much info, even from the workers, the scene typically confused in these situations. But don't be surprised if you see our little city featured on the evening news tonight, if this is really what we're being told at this moment. icon_eek.gif

Yes, where you've been with us. But no direct line of fire from the City Hall to the Pub, so we feel safe, and the police haven't evacuated us. But Wilton Drive is blocked from NE 6th Ave, and before the bridge at the FtL HS. I haven't heard if the school's been evacuated or locked down.

But now we're getting reports of a bomb at the 5-Points Publix, right next to where you used to live. We were shopping there earlier this morning.

Of course rumors go wild during an incident like this, so you take everything with a grain of salt. Except I saw the helicopters overhead, and the Sheriff's and local police cars responding, so THEY think something is happening. As do the workers who fled City Hall.

Thanks, we will! We trust the police will warn us if we come under danger. Other people outside on the sidewalk heard the automatic fire, a few hundred yards away, but inside with music playing we didn't. We didn't learn of it until the city office workers came in.

Was the dog firing an automatic weapon?

OMG! A cruise missle dachshund! LOL!

OK, getting some more info now. The issue was a suspected bomb near City Hall. The police sent in a robot and exploded it. Those may have been the explosions (probably echoes from the blast) that some people heard as multiple bangs.

It's not clear if it was a real bomb, but I think not. Nor at this point is there any indication there ever was a gunman, despite what the city hall workers were excitedly telling us after they were evacuated. Nor were there any bombs elsewhere, like at Publix, as people were reporting as we sheltered inside, a few blocks away from the suspected device. Here's a pic released by the police, I presume from one of their helicopters. I know this very spot:

So a memorable St. Patrick's Day ends for us, back home after the streets were reopened. At least it forced us to stay longer and drink more green beer. LOL!

southbeach1500 saidWell, that certainly was an exciting afternoon! icon_eek.gif

Never a dull moment, as my husband says. But hey, having our car's way home blocked while we're cozy in a gay bar is not the worst fate I can imagine. icon_biggrin.gif

Glad you are safe and glad for you that this is something rare in your neighborhood. Many years ago I once lived in a place where I heard gunshots nearly every night and after a while became so used to it that it was just normal background noise that didn't even cause me to bat an eye in concern.

No, that is the western part of the city, the Old Redford neighborhood, but it is near both Livonia and Southfield.
