Just looking for the best areas to stay in both these cities. I'll be doing some touristy things but I rather not stay in a tourist area.

    Thanks in advance

London: don't discount zone 2, it is perfectly easy to get into town. Vauxhall is a good area for gay nightlife and should have some cheap hotels.

Paris: I stayed in the Republique area, and I thought it was good. Someone else will have better advice for there though :-)

In Paris, the Marais (4th arrondissement) on the Right Bank is both a beautiful area and the City's main gayborhood. On the Left Bank, can't go wrong in St Germain (6th arrondissement). Bon voyage!

What's the "best" area"? Depends on what you want.

The most vibrant areas can be the most touristy and most noisy.

In London, unless renting an apartment, usually stay at Quality Hotel Hampstead - at Finchley road & Frognal - within walking distance to Hampstead.

In Paris, usually rent an apartment in the 16th - quiet and not many tourists.

Excellent choices of 2 cities in Europe. I stayed in the Monmartre area in Paris back in 2006 (close to the Sacred Coeur). I stayed over in Hammersmith close to Notting Hill in London 2010. You can take the Underground Tube and the Metro/Subway everywhere. I like the Louvre museum and the Latin Quarter in Paris. For London, Notting Hill, Piccadilly Square, Chinatown area and the English Modern museum. icon_smile.gif Le Marais is the gay area in Paris and is it Old Oxford (or Compton) st in London? I've been to some gay pubs over there. Have fun. icon_biggrin.gif

In Paris, except 18th, 19th and 20th arrondissements, everywhere is good (those 3 arrondissements are the poorer and a bit dangerous). Remember that Paris is very very small (17times smaller than London for example). So everywhere you stay, you'll be close to the center, and around 5 minute walk to a metro station
