What exactly is the point of believing in god if there isn't any evidence and he never answers prayers?

I only ever prayed for one thing in my whole life and I wasn't answered so if I do find out there's a heaven when I die God will get a good ear bashing!

I'm gonna guess it was the same thing a majority of gay men pray for early on in the process of self-discovery: for God to make them straight

No when I found out I was gay a lot of stuff made sense I've never prayed for being straight.

If the only time you ever called to talk to me was to ask me for a favor, I wouldn't give you anything either ... try asking the people you're always hanging with ... you seem to put so much faith in them, I'm sure they'll be happy to help you.

What's to say that God hasn't answered your prayers in some form or another?

We can't prove that God doesn't exist, either, so I'll stay in the middle with this one icon_wink.gif

I'm agnostic but I wouldn't be surprised if something like God or fate exists. I kinda 99.99% air on the side it's fate that manipulates everything but there's no karma. Fate has no sense of luck or fairness or balance. It's just there pulling the strings until you die and even if you don't just sit and wait to die how can you even know that it was your choice?

These questions have been asked and answered 1000 times on realjock.
As we were taught in school, there is no such thing as a vending machine God where you put in your prayers and you get out your wishes.
Athiests like to reduce religion to a cartoon level and then say they don't know how anyone could believe in God.
There's plenty of evidence in the existence of God. It's been discussed in many threads.

What exactly is the point of politicians if there isn't any evidence that they work for us and they never answer us?

Things still happen to get done,

Mainly to the point i think god is a focal point for the thing yet to be know and i read some where as to actually believing in him or about his existence that even Professor Stephen Hawking said about evolution vs God creating the heavens and the earth that god may have made the evolutionary system as it is.

I think that's a pretty good icon of the kind of God -- you know, the enthroned grumpy old white man with a beard -- that does NOT exist. It is a concept of God that has been around for a few thousand years in various forms but one which basically validates a hierarchical relationship: God Rules, we worship and obey; and if not God directly, his appointed vicars on Earth, be it the Pope, the King of England or who ever society wants us to believe are "our betters."

This is the God I do NOT believe in.

That doesn't mean I believe in no God at all…. but that my understanding of what the word "God" represents is something far, far more interesting, mysterious, subtle, and pervasive.

To me, God isn't something or someone far, far away, ruling and judging from a golden thrown. As the Sufi's say, "God is closer to you than your jugular vein." God is that 'something' that comes alive in those moments when we realize that we *are* alive and that life itself is a very precious gift. Some say "God is Love," and that is true so long as you understand "Love" is something more than a Hallmark greeting card. Love is the force that binds us to life; Love is the force that brings life into being; Love is the force that can overcome the finality of death.

Finally I'll say this, if your prayers aren't being answered it may be because you don't know how to pray. To pray you have to be in that state of knowing that you exist, not merely in a state of want or even need. When you know you exist, really feel the fullness of that, half your prayer is already answered.

I think people feel comfortable believing in something greater than them. They believe in it so much that it comes to a point where an unanswered prayer = god's plan for something different. That's how I interpret most people who believe in the Christian god to react anyway. Nothing particularly wrong with believing in it until you start wars or hurt people in the name of your god.

I don't even care to refute this because RJ is becoming pathetic and redundant with a majority of threads (And I'll write it in a child like manner to emphasize how useless):

    1) WHY U SO RACYST, Y U NO DATE ME?
    2) Y ATHEIST SO MEAN GUYZ??? YYYYY?

I did roll my eyes at your statement, though. icon_rolleyes.gif

I only do that when gays in particular mock atheists, and praise theists, and (I think) demonstrate a complete and utter lack of understanding of religion and history etc. I'd like to think I'm generally a nice guy, but that's not up to me.

Yes! The day I finally realized I'm gay (and it really all happened in a single day) I cried for happiness. Well, that tells you right there how gay I am. icon_rolleyes.gif

But seriously I did cry. And out of thankfulness that I finally had the answer to so many puzzling questions I had about myself. That explained so much about me that I never understood. And because I value truth & knowledge over lies & ignorance, even when the answer isn't what I was expecting, or initially want.

And the more I actually became involved with gay life the more grateful for being gay I became. I LOVE being gay, would never want my old straight life again, so I'm not lighting any church candles hoping to make THAT happen, I promise you. If I did believe in prayers mine would be to thank God for making me gay, because I'm very pleased with the decision. icon_biggrin.gif

Well, that would explain a lot. Since you don't understand religion at all.
Nice is what nice does. Don't promote the deaths of the thiests on RJ and then cry "You made me do it."
    Nobody is falling for that.
Absolutely no one here has mocked the athiests. There's a difference between criticizing and mocking. Some of the aethiests here, like you, do the mocking and bring RJ's philosophical discussions to their lowest levels.

You just said there is plenty of evidence that God exists, so please don't even insinuate you understand religion better than me. Also, I never promote anyone's death, I just said they should be punished according to their scripture. You're just rambling now.
