Michigan won't recognize more than 300 same-sex marriages performed last weekend before a court halted a decision that opened the door to gay nuptials, [Republican] Gov. Rick Snyder said Wednesday.

The governor's move closes the door, at least for now, to certain benefits reserved solely for married couples. The American Civil Liberties Union said more than 1,000 Michigan laws are tied to marriage.

Other elected officials have urged the Obama administration to recognize the marriages for federal benefits. The U.S. Justice Department, which previously said it was monitoring the situation, did not immediately comment after Snyder's announcement.

Dana Nessel, an attorney for two Detroit-area nurses who successfully challenged the gay marriage ban, said Snyder's position is "really an outrage."

The BBC also picked this up. The US looks so retarded among most of our allies.

The governor of the US state of Michigan has said it will not recognise more than 300 gay marriages performed after a judge struck down a ban.

    That's very cruel!

People just can't say "your marriage is illegitimate or a lie, and the partner you have been married to isn't your husband" to a couple who just has been recently married.
It's an unbearable insult piercing and hurting deep to their feelings and emotions of those who are involved.

The Governor's reaction is the typical Republican strategy: harm gay families in any way possible, all for the sake of a few brownie points among your bigoted Republican constituents.
Another proud day for the GOP. icon_rolleyes.gif

"Motorcycling actually kept my drinking lower than it is now. If I rode to a bar on my bike I had 2 drinks at most, often just 1, and as soon as I arrived. Then waited at least an hour from when I finished my last drink before getting on my bike again. Ride impaired on a motorcycle and you won't last long."

In fact about the only way in hell that I would vote for a Democrat is you voting for the Republican. Like we give a flyin shit who you vote for!

Why and for whom you vote is your business, but this is a REALLY uncalled for personal attack. Very TACKY and libelous. A political comment, NOT directed at you, and you find it OK to defame that person, with inferences of drinking issues.... since you can't apparently offer a more meaningful response to an intolerable political inequity being perpetrated by a bigot in a political party in "that state up north"....It's an embarrassment to say we live in the same city, in the same state.....you look for and start PERSONAL fights and then wonder why your popularity is that of a troll? Uncalled for and tacky violation....you OWE A-D an apology.

DON'T care about "history" or "bad will"....grow up!

What in the fuck do you think he does in about 2/3rds of his posts?

Where's your umbrage when it goes the other way? Like just about everything else ... political ... correct? Lefty doing it you don't have a problem in the world, but when a righty does it right back to a lefty .... oh the world's gonna end.

    And libel my ass?

It's HIS words, "Motorcycling actually kept my drinking lower than it is now", not mine, you blithering fat ass sanctimonious blowhard.

Good, sue me, but remember that the truth is what they call an 'affirmative defense'. Best you go look up the three elements of libel or would you prefer that I post them for you.

"A political comment, NOT directed at you"

    "RJ supporters"

Who in the hell do you think it's directed at?

"It's an embarrassment to say we live in the same city, in the same state"

And went to the same gym and were there most evenings at the same time ... so good .... move.

    "you OWE A-D an apology"

Just fuck you. Seriously, fuck you.

    And regarding the topic ....

I think Snyder and the AG should reverse course. It's not winnable long term and unnecessarily divisive.

I think Snyder has done a great job in Michigan and I think his attention should remain focused on what matters .... Detroit and Wayne County.

I agree 100% about Gov. Rick Snyder and Michigan's AG needing to reverse course on this issue. Even if the Governor doesn't that doesn't make him a terrible leader. Rick Snyder is the best thing that ever happened to Michigan. He has saved the state from horrendous financial ruin with his long overdue tough fiscal policies. He now has his hands full with several Michigan cities being in state receivership, most notably Detroit and Flint. Both those once proud and prosperous cities were ruined by monopoly democratic rule to a point that they need emergency financial managers to take over their city governments and get their books balanced and their debts paid off. I wish that we could get a politician like Rick Snyder to become Governor of New York and clean up the dysfunction in the Albany statehouse.
