Hey guys, so I'm getting back from Afghanistan soon and thinking of going to Vegas in mid-June for leave. However, I can't get any of my buddies to go with me. I don't know the area well, so I was wondering if anyone can recommend somewhere to stay (preferably on the strip) and places to go. Thanks.

Stay - The Cosmopolitan. Very swank, good restaurants, straight nightclubs and nice pools.

Entertainment - lots of things to do on the strip. Cirque du Soleil and the tons of shows available, then there are the casinos, lots of shopping, visiting the different hotels, etc. Not a whole lot of gay activities in Vegas.

Best experience I had in Vegas was a zipline excursion over the desert. It was a blast!

Thanks. The zip line sounds like a blast. But the cosmopolitan looks a bit expensive. Maybe they have military discounts...

I stayed at the Aria (right next to the Cosmo). Very nice and well appointed resort.

with either the Cosmo or Aria you will be in party central.

Do the rides on top of the Stratosphere!

I've always had a good experience at Holiday Inn Express. I haven't been to the one in Vegas, but I can't imagine it being too bad. The Yelp and Trip Advisor reviews seem to indicate it's decent.

If you're just looking for a place to crash and not expecting a resort experience, then it should be sufficient. Also, it's reasonably priced and I think they offer military discounts. It doesn't hurt to ask.

    Place to go..
You can walk to places along the strip. I don't gamble and I'm not really into the shows. So the strip is like a half day of exploring for me. If you like outdoorsy stuff, I'd recommend renting a car and explore stuff outside of the strip. Like Hoover Dam, or Red Rock Canyon. Or the zip line as mentioned earlier. If you're going in mid-June, it might be kinda hot. So I'm not sure if outdoor activities is what you're looking to do.

I would definitely recommend calling and talking to a real person at a few places. They'll be more inclined to tell you about military rates/discounts. Also, I highly recommend seeing Absinthe while you're in town. One of the better shows in town, and not nearly as expensive as some of the other shows.

Mother Army is allowing me to go from June 12-16. So I got a good military deal on a room at NY NY (and free tix for the roller coaster!). I've heard it's a decent hotel. If not please lemme know cause I can cancel at any time.
Also looked into Absinthe and only heard awesome things so might have to do that. Even though I'm not a club kind if guy (more if a sports bar/pub dude), I think I'm going to expand my gay horizons and check some gay clubs out. Any suggestions?

If you book in advance you can get cheap rooms. We went last Feb and stayed at the Luxor for $39 a night. Luxor is showing its age, but it was by far the least expensive part of our vegas trip. We actually spent very little time there, so it didn't really matter what it looked like. If we go again, we will probably stay at mandalay bay (and go when it's warmer and the pools are open).

NYNY is a good hotel, and it's in a good location on the Strip. It has a great Irish pub inside as well. I haven't been to any of the gay bars here, but I can ask around. They aren't in short supply, though.

I've been to Vegas total about 7 times now. Stayed at a different hotel every time. I like The Excalibur and Stratosphere. MGM, NY NY are good too. I think they have like a pool gay party at the Luxor in the summer. Check the dates. Luxor is a good hotel too.

Update: probably not going anymore. The guy I was seeing apparently has been sleeping with anything that moves while I've been in Afghanistan so I'm probably just gonna swallow the cost of the trip and move on. Thanks for all your input and emails. Stay frosty.
