Los Angeles meningitis outbreak claims three gay men’s lives

Three of the eight victims of the Los Angeles invasive bacterial meningitis outbreak have died and all three who died were men who had sex with men

The announcement of the men’s death comes as Los Angeles County health officials ramp up calls for all men who have sex with men to get vaccinated against the disease – with free vaccines available for those without health care.

The men who died were all 27 to 28 in age and either lived or socialized in West or North Hollywood

Another gay man in the outbreak cluster is aged 50 and is still alive.

"Authorities say that men who have sex with men who share cigarettes or drug paraphernalia, kiss or share beverages with other people, or share communal housing such as jails, shelters or dormitories are particularly at risk of contracting the disease, which is also known as meningococcal disease."

That is frightening. I think there are a lot of us, who are otherwise careful sexually, let someone have a taste of of our drink or take a sip of their's or a swig out of someone's water bottle or think nothing of kissing a friend or making out with a guy.

Remember, there is a vaccine for this.

Got my vaccination last year, after that outbreak in NYC. I try to keep up with all the vaccines that are appropriate for me.

I should ask my doctor if I need another MMR vaccine (with measles outbreaks occurring again), but I should be okay there since I got the vaccine about 15 years okay.

I understand why mostly gay men contract AIDS, but why does this attack gay men?

Anyone who's HIV+ is vulnerable due to their weakened immune system. Adult gay males are a small percentage of society but 20% of them are HIV+. With all the hookup sites and anonymous sex it's far more easy to spread diseases in the gay population as opposed to the straight population.

"Robert Bolan, the medical director at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center, said there is cause for concern in the gay community because the infection rate is higher in men who have sex with men and especially higher in those who are HIV-positive.

Bolan said it is unclear why the disease seems to affect men who have sex with men at a higher rate, though the weakened immune systems of people who are HIV-positive might make them more susceptible.

“I think the important thing to understand is this is not an epidemic,” Bolan said. “But there’s a pretty strong signal that men who have sex with men, at least those who are HIV-positive, are at increased risk for invasive meningococcal disease.”

So I'm assuming most of the gay men being infected are HIV+.

Read this last night and it got me wondering why no mention is made that the 'straight' population can also get it since it is an airborne disease. Does someone here know and care to share? Thanks.

3 more dead from bacterial meningitis strain

    http://www.washingtonblade.com/2014/04/10/3-dead-bacterial-meningitis-strain/

However, the department said the three men who died didn’t have any direct contact with each other. The disease still is considered rare and sporadic and the department is shying away from declaring any outbreak in the gay community, the AP said citing authorities.

Four of the eight people who came down with the illness had sex with other men and three were HIV positive. The three who died in February and March were 27 or 28 years old and two were HIV positive, according to the department.

Of the other five people who fell ill, four are out of the hospital and one is hospitalized but recovering, the AP said.

The agency was “insensitive” for failing to announce the deaths earlier, Michael Weinstein, executive director for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, told the Los Angeles Daily News.

About a third of the 32 bacterial meningitis cases reported in the county since October 2012 involved men who had sex with men, the Daily News reported.

That population is most at risk right now, said Dr. Robert Bolan, medical director for the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center.

The county health department is “paying attention” and acting “in a timely manner” by urging vaccinations for members of the gay community, he told the newspaper.
