I was having tea with a friend. Remembering his mother, he said my mom patiently taught me how to tie my shoelaces when I was small. Who taught you how to tie your shoelaces? This simple act of kindness, why is it so memorable?

My mother taught me. Not sure why it's so memorable, but I do remember quite well.

A kindly old gentleman down the block. First he showed me how to tie my shoes, then he invited me in to take a bath with him.

My mother tried, but she made it far too complicated. So I taught myself. Just like I taught myself how to do a bowtie, when I found illustrated instructions too confusing. I figured it was basically the same as a shoelace knot, only the cloth kept flat and neat. And so it is.

Questions like these make me sad and angry because it reminds me that my father didn't teach me ANYTHING.

^ I was too young to have sexual thoughts about my nanny. In fact, puke!

I taught my 2 sons to tie their shoelaces. Each at 5, because kindergarten said they wouldn't allow kids to attend wearing laced shoes they couldn't tie for themselves.

And teaching each of them, 4 years apart in age, to tie their shoes is one of my happiest & proudest memories. Proud for them, proud for me, and in each case we did it in a single easy session at just over 15 minutes long. Smart boys!

I used the Army "by the numbers" step-by-step approach to teaching physical & mechanical skills. Worked beautifully in this case, perfect for kids at an early stage of cognitive development.

I don't remember who taught me but I think I bought my kids velcro shoes...so much easier than those knots in the laces! icon_eek.gificon_eek.gif
