Like you know, people have their [items] stolen in the gym while taking a shower or whatever.

Does it make a difference what time a person go to the gym?

and Im here mostly asking for advises/stories on this topic. thanks!

I never use the gym locker room. I dress for the gym at home. I carry my keys, phone, and ID while working out. When I'm done, I lay a towel over my car seat and then go home to changes/shower.

Time of day doesn't matter. I've seen cops show up during peak hours because someone's locker got broken into. It only takes a few seconds when no one is looking, to pop open a lock with a crowbar.

Serious problems mate. How can be it stolen? What kind of locks do you use? Key and lock? Or combination and lock? My lockers are fine. I would leave my clothes and stuff on the bench and it's fine when I get there. I would take my key with me obviously to the showers.

well, while none of my things are stolen, i am thinking for future since I have never been to LA fitness or 24 or lifetime. But I have read about gym theft or heard about them so I am curious.

and my uni gym has the rental lock and day lock, both uses basically number combination like the luggage locks.

So nobody steal clothes? lol, good.

There are some weird guys that will steal underwear. icon_neutral.gif

Basically, you should get a lock that cannot be popped open or cut. The shackle should be well protected or covered. Unfortunately, most gym lockers can't accommodate heavy duty locks such as this..

    Uni?
Yeah, I was going to say my last gym was the University gym.
Guys there hardly locked their lockers and often left valuable phones and head phones lying around. I think they were mostly naive, but didn't hear of anyone having something stolen.
I however had a pair of compressions shorts taken.
    Personally I wouldn't take anything I didn't or couldn't loose/replace easily.
Don't spend a lot on gear just to show off, or rather do do this, as I love watching a dude smash his Beats or drop his Ipad.

I risked it one time without a lock. I just forgot it. I put my stuff in the locker and I closed it. Happily nothing was stolen and I was pleased. Faith in humanity is restored, for a while.

Something I learned the hard way:
Lock your gym bag in your trunk!

    owl_bundy saidget yourself a lock.

on some real shit though, how do you use a gym locker without using a lock? icon_lol.gif most people that get their shit from a locker 99% of the time NEVER use a damn lock. icon_eek.gif

it's those lockers with built in number lock. basically you set up the number you wish to be the numbers that unlocks the locker, and then u scramble it after u set ur number.

wow, people still underwear? in a Men locker room? strange world. Is anything safe? Glasses?

and why would people steal headphones? that sounds gross.

people steal anything/everything. i've had stolen:

    - ball hats
    - phone
    - underwear
    - rugby shorts
    - speedos
    - shirts

one woman on my water polo team had everything stolen at once, in the middle of winter. we all had to give her clothes so she could go home in anything other than a wet bathing suit.

i carry one of those drawstring backpacks with me at the gym to hold my essentials... keys, water bottle, phone ect.

If I need to shower at the gym I leave my bag in the trunk, get it after my workout and hang it on a hook in the stall while I shower. I probably look like an asshole doing it but I could see some of my stuff being target worthy to scumbags.

Everyone just sits their bags down on the floor in a big pile at my gym. I leave my wallet and phone in my bag daily. There are no lockers and no one has ever been stolen from.

You'd think there was no such thing as locker room theft the way so many people leave their crap lying on locker room benches while they're showering or piled on the floor underneath their locked lockers blocking the locker below them.

Or, rows of unlocked lockers with things like billfolds, keys, and cell phones in them.

    Stupid people are stupid.

Whenever I am looking for a free locker and I keep opening unlocked lockers only to find people's belongings, I'm tempted to just chunk it all out in the open for everyone to see.

On the west coast, I've found that 24hour fitness super sports have decent-sized (8x10") lockers out in plain view of everyone.

Regular 24hr Sport gyms, only the locker room has lockers, which I avoid using. I think you have a much higher risk.

On a side note, I'm reaching an age where I need to find a lock with numbers that don't require reading glasses.icon_rolleyes.gif

I take my cell with me. I got a cell phone case, put my DL and credit card in it. Not much in the locker to steal. Tho I always lock it.

I try not to get too attached to stuff, but it still surprises me when people steal some of it. Just today, I discovered that someone swiped a couple of things off the deck of my boat. It must have been someone who had a key to the marina gate. (i.e., they could afford to buy their own shit, but it was just easier to take mine.) If you want to keep your stuff, you have to keep it locked down. And even then, if someone wants it badly enough, they can take it.

Only a distantly-related point, but around here, we have a lot of migrating endless-summer-surf-bums. They won't steal your stuff in the middle of the season, because, hey, you'd see them the next day... "Dude, that's my board!" But in the fall, when they're all moving on to Baja and points south, that's when stuff starts disappearing.

I only ever had troubles at YMCAs. At my current gym, which is private, some guys don't even put locks on their lockers. Or they unlock and leave their belongings exposed while they run off to the shower.

I can speak from experience at having my stuff stolen. I'm talking everything out of my LOCKED locker. Guy across from me kept trying to converse with me during my lunchtime workout and I just pretty much avoided it. Noticed him watching and then he took a very short shower. I dressed put everything in my locker (clothes, wallet, work ID, car keys, gym bag) and headed to workout. I came back to find my Master lock cut off and everything except my shoes, socks and underwear gone. No shirt, no pants, no belt, no wallet, no car keys, no gym bag, all was wiped out.

Fortunately my remote didn't work well with my car so my car was there but quickly called the police, but too late. Cancelled credit cards and had to replace everything.

I now don't take anything except ID to get back into my building and something with my name on it (in case I get hit by a bus on the walk to the gym). I also use this lock now:

Don't think a lock is automatic protection. I could not have secured my stuff any more than I did. Bottom line, don't take anything more than you need to the gym! It's probably more secure in your car, in the public parking lot, than in your gym locker!
