I just read that English actor Jeremy Davies has been cast in the lead role of an upcoming movie about the Stonewall riots. He's a fine actor (he was in War Horse, which should have been titled Spielberg's Worst Tendencies), but the crazy news to me is the film will be directed by Roland Emmerich. Emmerich's resume as director includes but is not limited to:

    White House Down
    10,000 BC
    The Day After Tomorrow
    The Patriot
Godzilla (the one with Matthew Broderick)
    Independence Day

Some of those movies are fun in a hacky kind of a way, but a few of them are downright terrible. The Day After Tomorrow is so ludicrous it likely hurt the argument for combating climate change.

Stonewall is a watershed moment for gay rights in America. Would you rather have a more skilled director like Gus Van Sant or Bryan Singer or Lee Daniels take a crack at this?

I should also point out that Roland Emmerich is gay and telling this story is important to him.

I'm willing to give Emmerich some benefits about directing the movie. I absolutely love Steven Spielberg's work such as E.T. and Jurassic Park. But I didn't think he can pull off directing Schindler's List given his reputation with directing incredible fiction stories and it ended up being an awesome movie.

So I'm curious on Emmerich's interpretation of the riots. It'll be a movie that I'll most likely watch on the big screen.
