    http://www.wnct.com/story/25208602/survey-finds-americans-more-skeptical-of-the-bible

"A new poll finds a sharp increase in the number of Americans who consider the Bible merely the teachings of men rather than the word of God."

To me, THIS was the most telling:

"The survey found the greatest increase in indifference toward the Bible was among Americans between the ages of 18 and 29."

18-29 are the millennials. It's not like the majority of skeptics are the old geezers that are dying off. Nope. The group most skeptical of the Bible, and most likely of religion in general, are the young people who are about to take over and become America's next lawyers, doctors, CEOs, teachers, professors, scientists, businessmen, judges, and politicians.

This isn't news to me, for a host number of reasons:

    1. The Religious Right. Young people are turned off by mixing religion and politics. Nothing more needs to be said.

    2. The culture of Modern American Churchianity has a LOT of share in the blame. Too many churches are social clubs, don't teach enough requisite doctrine, not enough discipling, etc. Not to mention Churchianity teaches you that Christianity is like a licensing agreement when you purchase a new product. A lot of pastors or preachers today may as well say: "Oh, you want to know about Jesus?! Excellent. All you have to do is click on this 'I Agree' button and you're saved!" If you really don't get into your faith much and don't grow, why even have a faith?

    3. Skepticism, questioning, dissent, etc., are treated as anathema and swept under the rug. It's GOOD to question things and analyze, ESPECIALLY one's own faith! In fact, I'd say it may help to make personal faith more healthy. However, by shutting people out of new ideas, it actually encourages the alleged believer to explore other paths. You know what they say when you tell somebody no...

As a Christian, I of course wish this wasn't a trend. However, I understand WHY this is trending, and I believe modern American Christians have a LOT of explaining to do.

Too bad I won't live to see this crazy shit die out altogether. It'll happen but probably not in my lifetime. And for the record, "crazy shit" doesn't just mean Christianity---Judaism is a crock too.

I thought that apart from fringe sects like the Hasidics, Jews weren't the type to proselytize or exhibit their faith?

Jews---even Hasidim---don't proselytize at all. What they do is try to get secular Jews like me to return to Orthodoxy. It has, sadly, happened to a few otherwise sensible people i used to know. I say "used to" because, like the observant in general, they no longer wish to associate with me. Which is fine.

Explain what? The only explaining American Christians have to do is how they repeatedly expect others to follow their religious beliefs, especially on lgbt issues. Religion is supposed to be a personal thing, but ever since the evangelicals latched on to the Republican Party in the late 60's/early 70's, they've made religion a political thing. In doing so, they are more Judasian than Christian.

Ah. Understood. Guess it happens even in the "modest" faiths.

I find the trend to be a good thing. I don't know how it is in other countries that are similar to the US, but our religious right since the emergence of Reagan have really soured politics.

It seems like it's worse now than before.

If God is powerful then he doesn't need puny humans prayers. If he's weak then we don't need Him. People say He loves us, yet throughout the world followers spread fear and hate. Religious people believe nonreligious people are unsaved. Saved from what? God's punishment for not worshipping Him?icon_rolleyes.gif

This whole religion thing is just bribery of the soul, to get people to do whatever He wants. Don't have sex to prove your obedience! Love your slave owner, love the bully at school, love all the people who have sinned against you, or you go to hell.

Based on God's own teachings, God should go to hell and forgive everyone. But that will never happen. This is God laughing at the people in hell: icon_lol.gificon_cool.gif

Religion is a false hope for the people who need it most, and a guise for the righteous to commit evil. It's about brainwashing those we like and excluding those we hate.

The most obvious conclusion is that there is no God, or if there is, he has no power and no love. He just has psychotic followers, sadly.

    Fuck that shit.

Reconsider? I think this thread is on a different subject matter. So here is the question: Do you only want the people on the thread to agree with you to be here? Why is discussing it means am asking you to reconsider your position? Couldn't it also be that you are trying to convince the rightness of atheism by posts such as HottJoe's above ?

No, because I don't care one way or the other. But this seems to be a favorite hobbyhorse of yours.
