Obama asks gay Bishop Gene Robinson to give prayer at Easter breakfast

President Obama this morning asked retired openly-gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson to give the closing prayer at the White House Easter Prayer Breakfast.

The President had invited 150 Christian leaders to the White House to kick off Holy Week.

Robinson is famous for a brouhaha that happened during his election as Bishop, as he was both openly-gay and in a relationship with a man.

Robinson’s ordination led to a number of conservative American Episcopalians breaking with the US church and forming their own anti-gay factions.

Great news; seeming acceptance from important figures in politics and religion. Moments like this that even relatively young people like me can see how far we've come.

I don't always agree with Obama's policies and decisions, but he's certainly someone who upholds the value of freedom and respect for his countrymen.

Oh wow! Obama must be so progressive and what a wonderful person, how forward-thinking and great!... so long as you ignore his atrocious record on everything else, like managing the largest continued bailout for Wall Street and the superrich in human history, massive corporate subsidies, the negotiation of the two largest and most secretive "free trade" agreements in history (the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the TransAtlantic Trade and Investment Partnership), or the fact that he has clamped down and punished more whistleblowers than all US presidents in history combined, or the NSA massive surveillance system, making the country a high tech police state, his utter disregard for basic rights and liberties, (ever heard of NDAA? probably not, but you should!), or the fact that he has bombed seven countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen, Libya and yes, even the Philippines (thank you, flying killer robots!), or the fact that he has sent highly trained murderers called Special Forces soldiers into over 120 countries around the world (imagine if China had sent murdering thugs and killers into as many countries, the reaction would be astounding), or that he has actively supported the Syrian civil war, the Mexican drug war (siding with the largest of the cartels, which is no secret, it's even been reported by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, NPR, etc), is actively militarizing the Pacific-Asian region, leading to increased tensions with Japan and China; that he is helping to destroy Ukraine, putting fascists in power which is ALWAYS a great idea!; that he supported military coups in Honduras, Egypt; gave the green light for ruthless repression by the Saudis in Bahrain (home to the US Fifth Fleet in the Gulf), and has generally been a perfect little puppet for the American Empire and its ruling class of corporate and financial oligarchs.

But hey, there was a nice little PR move where he invited some gay minister to say some shit, so obviously, symbols are more meaningful than actual actions or intentions.

Will the day ever come when the US president does not attend "prayer breakfasts?" If one is going to believe in god, why do you need to proclaim your beliefs in public with 100 ministers? What ever happened to the concept of private communications with god. I guess we have to blame Billy Graham for this now indestructible Washington institution - At least not too many lobbyists attend.
