    Hey guys,

So in a few weeks a group from Westboro Baptist Church (if you don't know of them, look them up) is planning on protesting my school's graduation ceremony. There is an anti-protest group forming and they're looking for ideas on how to non-violently thwart them from ruining the day for the graduating class.

Any Ideas? Has anyone ever taken part in an anti-WBC protest?

Announce in advance that the graduation ceremony will be highlighted with a water fight. Then you can bring in the super soakers and water canons.

HUGE, MASSIVE, GIGANTIC 'THANK YOU' banners!

No single group has done more to highlight how ridiculous bigotry is than WBC.

Fred Phelps and his family showed America what the bigots looked like. It wasn't a pretty picture and most people rejected not only the WBC's tactics but also their anti gay cause.

Lol this would be fun. But I'm looking for something a little more subtle that won't distract the students and families attending the ceremonies.

exposure2, the "thank you" banners are a great idea. Maybe they could be big enough to hide WBC from sight...

Have a clown protest where everyone dresses like a clown and makes noise with bicycle horns and penny whistles.

If I lived in Kansas, in reasonable proximity, I would sneak over to their church late at night, smash a window, and treat the building to a couple of Molotov cocktails.

What would be really effective, and should have been done long ago, is a united front against these kooks by other christian faiths, showing up and officially demonstrating/protesting against the Westboro mockery of christianity.

But....all they offer are chirping crickets.

No, the Thank You banners are best.

Confronting them affirms them (as the outsiders on the Right Hand of God). Martyrs. Water balloons are a bad idea, and likely to get you sued.

No, demoralizing them, by letting them know that their tactics are having the exact opposite effect of their intentions. Thank God for the Westboro Baptist Church. Amen.

What a disgusting group of people and an embarassment to the State of Kansas.

I'd check with your school and the rules for "protesting" protestors. Make sure you respect the rules at your school.
Ask some questions first... then plan to make it effective.

True, since it's a church with 39 members, most of whom are related and are lawyers. They are shit-stirrers. They should have been ignored, but white Liberal dimwits like Rachel Maddow and her equally stupid comrades decided to bang on and on about them.

I agree. They have done great things for gay equality by being miserable assholes.

The water balloons were obviously a joke. The banner idea is exactly the kind of thing I had in mind.
The purpose is more to preserve the day for the graduates and make WBC's presence as inconspicuous as possible to the students and their families.

Half the time the WBC never shows up. They announce these things to get publicity, and then are no-shows. I'm not sure what your school should do. Maybe check if they have permits, or other indications that they're really gonna be there, before you expend too much energy on this.

Practically stale, without a blessing, no blood of Jesus to wash it down with, and the emphasis of hunger in the birds, if they want something to fear they can be bludgeoned by my laurels.

    Posters/banners are a great idea....have positive messages on display...sort of an anti-protest...

Also....what type of venue is the ceremony....it is possible that entry to the venue may be tresspass.

Also, prepare some plans in case they do become a problem so that the unreasonable can be dealt with in a reasonable manner.
Much of their power comes from you stooping to their level....
