    http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2014/04/twilight_room_annex_will_close.html#incart_river

"The Twilight Room Annex will close for good tonight, owner Chris Penner said, after his bank accounts were seized in connection with a Bureau of Labor and Industries judgment.

The bureau ordered Penner last August to pay $400,000 to a group of transgender and crossdressing people whom Penner asked not to return to his bar. Penner appealed the bureau’s judgment, but the Oregon Court of Appeals has not yet reviewed his case...

The case centers around a voicemail Penner left in 2012 for a member of the Rose City T-Girls. The group had frequented the North Lombard Street bar every Friday night for two years. They brought anywhere from a dozen to 40 people -- some who crossdress, others who have fully transitioned to female -- into the cavernous club each week. But their presence drove other customers away, Penner said."

    --------
Seems like kind of a big fine for one voice mail...

It's hard to know what to think about this.
They claim that they weren't being rowdy. Possibly the owner was scapegoating them for a general decline in his business. But typically when I've seen a group of drag queens come into a bar, they start screaming and demanding everybody's attention. It's not unusual for the other customers to leave. I certainly do. (Except of course, in places where people go there expecting that sort of "entertainment." ) But if that were the case, you'd think that a bar owner would be smart enough to 86 them specifically for being disruptive and bothering other customers, not for being drag queens.

What if they really were behaving themselves perfectly well, but at the same time actually did drive away all the other customers, due to prejudices or whatever. (They could equally well be bikers or some ethnic group.) What should the owner do in that case?

40 DRAG QUEENS IN ONE PLACE??? Holy shit....they should have paid HIM for putting up with them. It's hard enough being in the same room with ONE drag queen (most of them anyway), much less up to 40.

Not enough details for me to decide, but I already think it was unfair to the bar owner.

Thanks. I wonder why the gals' night out simply couldn't have been moved to a slower night? Thursday night? Sunday night?

Penner said the Oregon Department of Revenue attempted to begin collecting payments for the fines last year. He called the office and said he was appealing the decision, and a clerk told him the department would hold off on billing him, he said.

Penner said he didn’t hear from the department again and assumed he was OK until he checked his LLC’s bank account Wednesday. Usually, his account sees a lot of activity on Wednesdays. That’s the day his lottery payments come in and his payroll checks go out.

That wasn't a good move on his part. Overall, he should have personally met with the group and made some kind of arrangement.

Drag queens are the most obnoxious and annoying pieces of shit and are a horrible embarrassment to the gay community. The owner had every lawful right in the world to ask these loud mouthed drag queens not to come back to his bar especially if the overwhelming majority of his clientele was complaining about these weirdos. Shame on the state of Oregon for shutting down his baricon_mad.gif

Please state your evidence that this group of drag queens, was, as you claim:
    1. Loud-mouthed.
    2. That the "overwhelming majority of his clientele" was complaining.

Most drag queens are loud and obnoxious. I have yet to see one that is respectful of others around him and who can talk at a respectable level. I detest drag queensicon_mad.gif

i bet there is more to this than what we read here. Things along the lines of previous business history and police intervention the bar had.

I don't usually agree with you much on things like this but I have to agree on this. I have very rarely seen a well behaved drag queen. Obnoxiousness seems to go with the costume. And the owner sounded exceedingly compassionate and nice on the voice messages and even encouraged dialog to make sure there were no hard feelings. He obviously didn't want to make that decision but did so to try and save his business. People who are against him I'm guessing have never owned a business.

A gross over generalization. I hope you don't own a business that excludes anyone based on bigotry. I heard that Dinks here in Palm Springs was closed for a similar reason. They were a "Sophisticated" Gay bar and refused service to Drag Queens or TVs. They had a dress code (no tank tops for 1) and didn't want 'their kind' there.

The owner did have a history with BOLI - he previously won an action against them. They tried to make him pay back wages owed to employees by a previous owner of the bar. When this case came up, the director of BOLI personally filed the complaint and levied the fine. He claims that it's pure coincidence, but the director does have a history of draconian proclamations and seems like the vindictive tin-god type to me.

    It isn't the "absolute truth"!
I worked in bar that had a Drag Show night. I'm no fan, at all. Bad lip-syncing, tacky outfits over inflated egos is the norm. BUT one time the sound system cut out, and this one older guys started singing acapella and he was damn good. Over time I actually got to know him. He worked, he wasn't loud or obnoxious, didn't do drugs. He was a nice GOOD guy!
When you speak in absolutes about people, you will absolutely be proven wrong.

I am not wrong. Most drag queens are loud and obnoxious. The overwhelming majority of them are undesirables with their garish, annoying behavior and their expecting everyone to give them undivided attention as if the whole world revolved around them.

it's good when they add some comedy or levity to the act, but when they just try pull off the Liza Minelli stuff, it's usually just dreadful

That's awful to whats happened. I can understand how the Drag Queens/transgendered patrons would be upset, but what the BLI did was overkill. Had there been a meeting with the owner and Rose Club, I'm sure things would have been resolved.

I've never really hung out with Drag Queens, but from their displays in various media fronts, they do portray themselves larger than life personalities. And while we do live in progressive times, not everyone can cope having decibel levels out of norm.

I have to admit If I'm in a bar that starts having a drag show I usually leave as I hate having an amateur performance blaring over my conversation. The performances I've seen always had tacky cliche humor.
