Buying Friends On-Line, Right or Wrong?

NYT: Whoever said, “Money can’t buy you friends,” clearly hasn’t been on the Internet recently. These imaginary citizens of the Internet have surprising power, making celebrities, wannabe celebrities and companies seem more popular than they really are, swaying public opinion about culture and products and, in some instances, influencing political agendas.

Many of new friends that can be purchased live outside the United States, mostly in India, Bangladesh, Romania and Russia — and they are not exactly human. They are bots, or lines of code. But they were built to behave like people on social media sites.

But today’s bots, to better camouflage their identity, have real-sounding names. They keep human hours, stopping activity during the middle of the night and picking up again in the morning. They share photos, laugh out loud — LOL! — and even engage in conversations with each other. And there are millions of them.

Great idea! I'm going to set up a new paypal account in case anyone wants to pay me to be their friend on here.

To be honest, I think a money incentive may actually bring out a better friend, than many non-purchasable friends people acquire throughout life.

I'm not opposed to it, If this became popular, I think i could make a fortune off of being a professional friend for a living. I usually treat people way better than I should and get walked on because of it, then I leave and they become devastated.

Now if I just got payed for putting up with other people's bullshit, this could be a great setup.

We already have grindr and tindr, where we can find sex mates like short/long term job ads, why not purchase friends now? icon_biggrin.gif

In my humble opinion, if you have to buy your "friends," they aren't really your friends.

If these bots get too smart even though they don't technically exist they may develop a consciousness and take over the world.
