Is USA a Democracy Or Oligarchy?

NYT: Do the Rich Call the Shots? A recent study by Martin Gilens and Benjamin I. Page examining 30 years of opinion surveys and policy decisions by the federal government found that, “When a majority of citizens disagrees with economic elites and/or with organized interests, they generally lose.” The average voter has little influence on government, the study found, but the well-to-do hold tremendous sway.

Has the United States become more of an oligarchy than a democracy?

Yes, I think in the US the more accurate term would be plutocracy, government by the wealthy. It's true that ordinary citizens may still vote (though Republicans are working on that), but enough of them are swayed by deceptive political ads placed by the wealthy that the wealthy frequently see their candidates win, especially at the local & State levels, even when their agendas are hostile to average Americans.

And once politicians are in office they are most influenced by the wealthy. They are seduced by every kind of gift & perk, free trips and lavish entertainments, and just the thrill of associating with the rich & famous. Heaven forbid they should spend any time with the working class voters who put them in office in the first place.

I watched the Ervin Hearings after Watergate and watched the 3 fake Bush wars, but the current state of government is just bullshit. Cops dressed up as Special Ops guys, NSA fairy tales, 1% having 1/3 the nation's wealth.

Obama just doesn't have the balls to stand up to these guys, he's no LBJ.

No way I thought we'd be in this state when I was 15.

Australia is slowing moving in this direction too. icon_sad.gif It's nowhere near as bad as in the US yet though. It's mostly got to do with control of the media here.
