Most people's concept of god is just a reflection of themselves. For example, if you are a by-the-rules kind of person the god you believe in will be an authoritative figure just waiting to zap you for any minor transgression of his laws and you will often remind others that god is watching. This was the type of person my parents were/are.
If you are a compassionate person your god will be a touchy/feely, I'm OK/You're OK, anything goes kinda god that can't be pinned down on any particular moral question.
Just my experience. Others are free to disagree. I don't care. I'm not sure I believe in any god as taught by any religion. If there is a god he is so far and above my comprehension and I choose not to speak for him/her/it.
