    Hi all,
I've been on my program for maybe 6 weeks now, and am starting to like some of the progress I'm seeing, both in terms of building muscle, and in losing excess fat. One thing, though, that my gym's personal trainer has said has me confused. He swears that abwork (crunches, situps, etc.) burns fat around the midriff.

From all of my university health science classes (no, I wasn't a gym major; I just took the classes b/c they were fun), I'd generally heard that you can not specifically target an area for fat loss except with liposuction. Working abdominal muscles burns calories, and slowly breaks down some fat, but no faster than exercising other muscle groups. Abwork only helps in strengthening your core. Granted, once the fat is gone I'll have a killer set of abs, which is still something to strive for.

Has theory 180ed in the last 10 years (again)? Does abwork actually burn more bellyfat?
