What do you eat? and how much protein is truly enough?

    just curious to see what foods you guys like to eat and whether you count your calories? protein and ratio amounts? icon_smile.gificon_razz.gif

    I mainly eat for nutrition, and not for taste. But I don't count calories or measure my food. I like to eyeball my caloric and nutritional intake by what's listed on the packaging. As far as ratios go, it's more like 60/40 protein/carbs for me. I take in additional carbs prior to a run or gym workout.

    Protein comes from chicken breasts and beef. Carbs are from rice and pasta and breads. Fat from peanut butter. I need to eat more veggies though. I also use protein powders and meal replacement powders for post-workout nutrition.

    This is a very individual thing, so we can all tell you what we do, but it's not clear that's going to have any relevance for you. My guess for you -- you're young, lean and obviously already have a solid muscular physique (rawr!), so I'd bet it's more about calories, timing, and number of meals for you than any particular tweaking of protein/carb/fat ratios.

    I think calories and timing are the primary knobs for most guys who aren't couch potatoes. That's true for me too. I've tweaked protein/carb/fat ratios and run experiments for at least a decade, and those ratios pale in comparison to total calories and timing of meals.

    What are my current ratios? Given that I realized they aren't all that important, I just try to eat a balanced diet. 40/40/20 is a good baseline start (40% calories from carbs, 40% from protein, 20% from fats), but like I said, those ratios didn't really matter to me.

    That said, I'm sure there's nutritionists here who could shed a lot more light on this topic.

    I always count calories. You really have to have an idea what you're eating.

    Balanced diet.

    Ratio vary.

    Listen to your body.

    In your case, you may have completely different mental and physical goals than anyone replying (just a common sense thing). It's o.k. to listen to your body and do your own thing.

    If you like being thin, you can eat a certain way.

    If you like being muscular, you can eat a certain way.

    If you like being fat, you can eat a certain way.

    There are so many variables (activity levels, base metabolic rate, work performed) that it's impossible to give sound advice without more information as to your goals.

    Best to be your own man.

    well the reason i ask is cuz 80 percent of anyones results come from food. I have tweaked alot and found what is better for me but the problem I have is not getting enough calories without adding foods that arent so healthy.... but that was over a year ago when i ate like that. now, I eat way better my family makes fun of me it sucks but i know i have to. anyways, now i eat about 2200-2500 calories a day and never more than 3000 . couldnt imagine eating more than that. also the protein is the hardest thing for me cuz im convicing myself that we only need like 15 percent protein and i find it hard to eat one gram per pound a day, thno i get to about 120-130 by last meal.

    I think the number 1 reason lean guys hit a plateau in gaining muscle is because they don't eat enough calories. It's recommended to eat as many grams of protein as you are in body weight, for me 208 grams of protein a day, which is HARD, but even then you still need plenty of carbs and LOTS of water to get all the chemical processes going in your body to create new body mass.

    If you're doing things right, you will gain a little bit of fat along with all the new muscle, and if you're metabolism is right you can just do some lean eating and light cardio once you're done with your bulking phase.
