In the summer of 2013, according to multiple sources with knowledge of their exchange, Shepard Smith approached Fox News president Roger Ailes about publicly coming out. The newly attached anchor was eager, at the time, to finally acknowledge his sexuality. “It’s time,” he told Ailes and other colleagues. “It’s time.”

Instead, Ailes informed Smith that the network’s famously conservative audience would not tolerate a gay news anchor.

"I'm thinking about coming out, Boss. Is that okay with you?"

Wondering, has Shep ever reported for Faux on ENDA?

Awful, but not surprising. It's hard not to become visibly sick if I watch that network!

Even the Politico says the Gawker piece is a joke:

By July, however, Smith had already renewed his contract with Fox News. He had re-upped on June 7 with the expanded role of managing editor. Sources also told POLITICO that Ailes and Smith began discussing the aforementioned programming changes in the Spring of 2013. As previously reported, Ailes and Smith had dinner together -- at the Four Seasons -- in April, at which point Ailes told Smith he wanted to make Smith the face of a new breaking-news division. Smith would leave primetime to do more work in the field, but would continue to host at 3 p.m.

He actually got a promotion to ME. Also, the story about the boyfriend at the party was false. Also, Shep's boss has attended gay weddings of his employees. Also, Shep himself has called the story a "100% fabrication."

But eff it, let's not have the truth get in the way of a good, knee-jerk FOX News bashing.

Since when was any misrepresentation (patella-driven or otherwise) required in order to bash that particular steaming pile of horse shit?

    from Politico:

"A Gawker report alleging that Fox News chief Roger Ailes prohibited host Shep Smith from coming out as gay contains mulitple factual inaccuracies, according to Fox News sources."

    According to whom again?

    "according to Fox News sources"

    "according to Fox News sources"

Okay then, that's all the proof we need.

Fox News is the target of the Gawker article, but they're not allowed to respond?! And one of those sources in the Politico article being Shep himself. Read the whole thing. Also, again: he was PROMOTED to managing editor.

And it should be added that Ailes and Fox have actually been getting tons of flak from the religious right over being too pro-gay- moving Megyn Kelly to 9:00, Fox News' corporate sponsorship of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalist Association, among other things. http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/kincaid/130814

There are few people in broadcast journalism that elicit a negative violent reaction in me. Megyn Kelly is one of them. She just comes across as so incredibly self righteous and smug. My brother watches Fox news and loves her because she's hot. That's the only reason, and I think a reason a lot of guys in my brother's demographic watch her.
Piers Morgan is the other newscaster that makes me want to punch him--and I'm not really a violent person. I was actually glad he got cancelled. I got so tired of his sanctimonious guns are bad angle he brought to every interview. We get it, guns are ba'ad, M'kay?
As far as Shepard Smith, for the longest time I couldn't tell if he was just gay or Southern. It seems to me that lately he's been hamming the gayness up a bit. But I can't see how it would really hurt the network if he decided to come out. Didn't seem to negatively impact Anderson Cooper.

Hey man - great posts challenging the left wing nuts here. Check out my thread here if you want to see another example of how they "think" using the term very loosely. icon_lol.gif

Kinda sucks about going back into 'closet' even though its an open secret now. Can he not simply get into another news network?

I have no sympathy for him. He's been with Fox since the beginning, 1996, and was last reported as making $8,000,000 a year.

I understand we all need a paycheck, but Smith should be ashamed for working at such a homophobic corporation that does not know how to tell the truth.

Hopefully a REAL news organization will rescue him soon.

Have never seen Smith on the air, but it seems there is never any news on FoxNews - just republican party propaganda. If he has been a major part of their so-called news team, maybe he doesn't have the qualifications to report actual news.

I think it's important he stays on FOX to allow the pin heads who watch it to have a glimpse into reality.

Southbeach, your knee jerk response to defend FOX might be premature. Despite the network's rush to spin themselves as a secret friend of the gays, I'm not buying it.

Why do you think Shep stays in the closet if not for FOX and its audience?

Also do you think that a report by Gawker, Slate and Buzzfeed amongst others regarding FOX's homophobia will influence what anyone thinks of FOX's image?
No one needed an investigative reporter to tell them what is so obvious. FOX is pure homophobia just the way its redneck, rightwing audience likes it.

The Catholic church's stance is that it's okay to be gay, as long as you don't act it. That's pretty much where the republicans stand. You're not allowed to act gay, or get married... You're pretty much just a eunuch, as far as they're concerned.
