Curious -- About "Hidden Members" on the Forum

Many of the other places where I visit online (granted, this is the only gay oriented forum I'm active on, but I do online literary role play and chat other places), when someone refuses to show their face on the forums to back their words... they're considered a troll or flamer.

I've found, over time, that some things are universal no matter where you go (for example, caps means yelling), and some things aren't. So...

I'm curious what the consensus is here at RJ? What are your impressions of "hidden members" on the forum?

While your profile is hidden, you should not be allowed to post to forums. The ignore feature is already limited in that you still often see those you have on ignore when quoted by others. If a person has their profile hidden, you are not able to put that person on ignore.

That was changed. Now you can.

Oh good. And I just did it and unfortunately it was someone that I did not even dislike, but it's annoying when people do that.

When you want time off you hid your profile and all your posts appear automatically hidden, what youre gonna do about it?

You can't make the posts already made hidden. It would interfere with the flow of the thread, but it can be made so you can't make any new posts while hidden.

In theory that sounds ok. But guys will just unhide, post, and then hide again. Doesn't really solve a problem. Just inconveniences the hider temporarily.

I think they should just get rid of the ability to hide your profile. It's a dumb feature. If you don't want to be on the site, then delete your account and be done with it. If you want to take a break, then don't log in until you're ready to come back.

Its not a dumb feature, what if you want to take a time off without losing all your previous comments, buddy list, etc?

There's nothing wrong with hiding a profile but when the person who has hidden their profile seems pretty suss and stupid when they're still posting from it icon_razz.gif

I'm wondering about this "hidden members" part, too. Thanks for sharing on this "unique" status.

Hidden members should sign the Pledge of Silence.

I had always thought you couldn't be "hidden" to post, but that active members (if they become "hidden") show as such on forums in which they had posted previously.
Maybe that isn't the case. I would agree that if you post, it should be clear who you are.

I just act as if "hidden members" are not there. No need to put them on ignore, I just skim right past them. If they want to be hidden then I can only assume that they do not want to be seen.

Why can't you take time off without hiding your profile? Just log off with your profile or if that's too much work, just don't come to the URL for your time off.

Since it is so easy to figure out who posted what with the quote-function, I wonder why bother to hide to begin with?

They can be either hidden or deleted, and sometimes suspended by Admin. Older threads will have lots of those who have deleted their accounts, but their posts remain.

A way to view them is to hit QUOTE in their post. Then you will see their account name. But only if you're signed in as a member. General public visitors cannot quote and post. Unless some other member has already quoted them, and then their name is visible in the other post. Clear? (My head hurts)
