    This is Nika and Illya.

    And this is Nika's family
    dy7BBVM.png

My Mom called me today in tears telling me the news of how my brother is going to lose his dog. Allegedly Nika, the full husky on the left in the pic above, got out while my brother and his wife were out of town and killed their neighbor's rabbit. She's now being sentenced to death.

"Nika, our 1.5 year old Siberian Husky got into our neighbor's yard while my wife and I were in Mexico on our honeymoon. During our trial today, the judge ruled that Nika must be put down because she is a danger. This is so far from the truth it is disgusting. My wife and I have already fixed our fence and installed an underground one, too. Additionally, we are going to install a chain link fence to prevent this from ever happening again. This, apparently, was not enough for the judge and the city prosecutor, who would rather SLAUGHTER an innocent animal and a beloved member of our family. We have even had friends and family offer to take Nika, but the court still said they would rather kill her.

This city ruled without due process, allowed us no time to provide a defense, and clearly showed a vendetta. Even if we can't save Nika, I pray we can prevent any family from ever feeling like we do right now."

I'm sorry for making this kind of post on here but I honestly don't know what else to do.

This dog is my brother's life. Please help.
Please add the facebook group, post it on your wall, sign the petition. Honestly anything helps and mean a lot to me. Thanks guys.

I see you already raised $750 but I'm confused.

Was Nika left unattended when your brother and sister-in-law went out of town, and if so, how did he get out? Shouldn't a dog walker have been hired if Nika had a history of escaping the existing fences?

How can money save Nika? Is the case on appeal and this is part of a defense fund?

Is this a personal or politically motivated judicial vendetta?

Was this a neighbor's pet rabbit?

What about justice for the rabbit and its family?

As part of grief counseling, direct your brother to:

Ok a few things people aren't understanding.

    - I'm not on here asking for money. I'm asking for support for the page. My brother does have a fund page but I'm taking it down because it seems to be causing confusion on the motives of this post.

    - Someone was watching the dogs while they were on vacation and she got out at that time.

    - This was the neighbors pet rabbit that she kept outside in a cage and he feels terrible about the incident. My brother is willing to pay what ever he has to for compensation for the rabbit and family. To kill his dog because of the rabbit's death is not only inhumane but disturbing. I don't believe a death for a death is ever a fair trade.

It is quite strange. Imagine the number of birds, small pets and other wildlife that are killed by house cats every day, but we don't put them all down.

In this case the rabbit was a pet, like a puppy or a kitten, which it could have been. Bill, long ago when he was young, had to put down his dog Kaiser. K attacked and killed the neighbour's pet. In that case, a very small (lol, rabbit sized) dog. The intent behind euthanaizing is that it can't happen again.

I think that if the rabbit's owner demands that the dog not be put down, the petition to save the dog will carry a lot of weight.

I'm sorry about all of this. We had a similar situation - huskies that could get out (or possibly being let out). We did everything we could to secure them, but it's almost impossible to secure every method of escape. One even tried to jump out of a 2 story window.

The bottom line is that, if the dog kills a pet or bite a person, it's considered a menace and will be put down. Some areas are more strict than others, but those are the rules. Regardless of how it happened or when, your brother's dog is his responsibility. If the dog gets out, then it needs to be boarded in a cage where it can't escape, like at a vet's office.

Pretty rough for sure. It sounds like an accident that went terribly wrong. Your brother sounds very responsible and dogs, um, do go after rabbits. I'm certainly happy to help. I hope it all get resolved.
    Really unfortunate.

Like I said in the WOYM,

Very sad. Stupid decision - dogs kill rabbits it's in their nature, like sharks eating seals.

Any possibility of spiriting the dog away, or is it too late for that? Generally animal control shelters are not peopled/guarded at night.

True. My German Shepherd got out because my dad left the side door open and while he was talking to the neighbor, the dog bit her. it wasnt a full bite but rather a warning. He was trying to protect my dad. Neighbor tried having our dog put down but we fought for months in the courts. He is designated a dangerous dog but he wasnt put down. I dont know if i could have held myself from doing something i would have regretted if he was put down. Lucky them.

That's really sad. My dog has unfortunately killed rabbits and squirrels in our yard, but thankfully they were not someone else's pet.

It's too bad that the neighbor couldn't find a resolution without dragging your brother to court.

Btw, they are both very cute. I like how one dog looks like he's smiling in all the pics and the other one looks like he's giving the stink eye. Pretty adorable!

Good luck resolving this issue. I hope you win!

*hugs* I'm so sorry for whats happening to your family.

I've invited my close and her husband to join as they have beloved Husky of their own named Prince.

Hope they reverse that decision. Its an unfortunate circumstance but putting it to death when it has no prior history of violence is senseless.
