I think we need to be very cautious about limiting freedom of speech. What this idiot said is both ignorant and offensive, but it's certainly withing his rights to spew garbage in anything that may be construed as private. Which puts his employers in a tight spot: who wants to host this kind of stupid bigotry?

Or is it better to expose bigotry and let the light in to kill the microbes?

On the other hand, as more and more of this sort of things blows up in the perpetrator's faces, maybe some of them will shut up - or, though I doubt it - re-think their caveman positions.

Frankly, I don't know where the balance point lies, but I can find no sympathy for this hate-filled moron and his pontificating.

    notice the papers response:

"Last week, Mr. Eschliman expressed an opinion on his personal blog that in no way reflects the opinion of the Newton Daily News or Shaw Media. While Mr. Eschliman is entitled to his opinion, his public airing of it compromised the reputation of this newspaper and his ability to lead it...
"Mr. Eschliman has a right to voice his opinion. And we have a right to select an editor who we believe best represents our company and best serves the interests of our readers."

This is not just about homophobia but about being objective which is what gives newspapers their credence.

The article states that: "He ranted further:

[Jesus] said there would be deceivers. He said those deceivers would cause Christians who remain true to His teachings to become reviled. He said false prophets would follow to deceive even more, and that lawlessness will abound.
    "

That phrase particularly, "there would be deceivers", works against being objective because it shuts down conversation. It says, here's my point of view and any other point of view is invalidated because it counters my point of view.

That might work for a blogger, it is pretty much necessary to a religion, but not appropriate at a newspaper of any creds, certainly not when exhibited publicly.

    The firing is entirely just.

The right has been having a meltdown about this in online comments today. Of course there is the usual mistake they always make about this, that his 1st Amendment rights have been violated. There is also a new one, due this being the guy's blog outside of work, that his privacy rights have been violated, despite this being a blog that anyone with access to the internet could read. And then they are crying about his rights as an employee, you know, those rights they don't give a shit about until something like this comes up and affects one of their own.

If they're genuinely concerned about protecting people's employment rights, they'll fight to pass ENDA.

dayumm saidIf they're genuinely concerned about protecting people's employment rights, they'll fight to pass ENDA.

In other words, they'll continue to oppose ENDA. But continue to support the God-given "right" to impose their fundamental Christian bigotry on others.

What might rightfully incense the right would be undue obstructions of free enterprise.

So what is the newspaper selling? It isn't just news. You can get that anywhere. What they sell is objectivity. They coalesce all the sides of the story while ideally endeavoring a balanced view and while analyzing the facts as they present themselves (answering the questions: who what where when & why) and giving more weight as verified evidence indicates.

Their stock-in-trade has been damaged on two faces, not just by losing the hard fought reputation of objectivity, but also in terms of integrity. Because if this employee is a person of integrity, then he'd conduct himself at work as he does in his religious life, he'd give the greater weight not to where evidence falls but in line with opposing false prophets. That's not how you gather the news. So he has shown not just his inappropriateness but also his incompetence. People get fired for that all the time.

Can you imagine going on a white-supremacist tirade on a public website and expecting to keep your job? I can't.
