An absurdly disturbing story about the kidnap of 310 girls because they were in school, that didn't start out getting mainstream press but pressure has been building:

Did the US State Department forgo an opportunity to label them as terrorists?

Islamist Militants Kill Hundreds of Civilians in Northeastern Nigeria

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/08/world/africa/islamist-militants-kill-hundreds-in-northeastern-nigeria.html?_r=0

The latest attack, on Monday, followed a classic Boko Haram pattern: Dozens of militants wearing fatigues and wielding AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenade launchers descended on the town of Gamboru Ngala, chanting “Allahu akbar,” firing indiscriminately and torching houses. When it was over, at least 336 people had been killed and hundreds of houses and cars had been set on fire.

I think this is more about pressure on a government that hasn't been paying much heed to the issue... and possibly technical aid in helping to find these kids and bring them home.

A start for instance would have been to brand the organization as a terrorist organization to increase the ability to devote more intelligence resources and restrict funds from reaching them:

Like it or not, the fact the US is so economically powerful not only makes it a target but also a transit point for money, people and resources for a lot of terrorists out there.

Boko Haram and the Kidnapped Schoolgirls
The Nigerian terror group reflects the general Islamist hatred of women's rights. When will the West wake up?
    http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303701304579549603782621352
Since the kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls in Nigeria last month, the meaning of Boko Haram—the name used by the terrorist group that seized the girls—has become more widely known. The translation from the Hausa language is usually given in English-language media as "Western Education Is Forbidden," though "Non-Muslim Teaching Is Forbidden" might be more accurate.

But little attention has been paid to the group's formal Arabic name: Jam'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-da'wa wal-Jihad. That roughly translates as "The Fellowship of the People of the Tradition for Preaching and Holy War." That's a lot less catchy than Boko Haram but significantly more revealing about the group and its mission. Far from being an aberration among Islamist terror groups, as some observers suggest, Boko Haram in its goals and methods is in fact all too representative.

The kidnapping of the schoolgirls throws into bold relief a central part of what the jihadists are about: the oppression of women. Boko Haram sincerely believes that girls are better off enslaved than educated. The terrorists' mission is no different from that of the Taliban assassin who shot and nearly killed 15-year-old Pakistani Malala Yousafzai—as she rode a school bus home in 2012—because she advocated girls' education. As I know from experience, nothing is more anathema to the jihadists than equal and educated women.

    More Liberal feel good bullshit!

If Islamic Terrorism, as John Kerry says, is caused by poverty, does anyone really think the leaders of Boko Haram are sitting somewhere in the back woods of Nigeria paying attention to Twitter and Face Book quacking in their boots because a bunch of Liberals have launched another do nothing feel good campaign so they can feel good about not having done anything to begin with?

    ^^^^
I'm agreeing with both shybuffguy and Sharkspeare on this, in the sense that Facebook feel-good-ism and prayer are both laughable.

I'd rather every available Special Ops unit available go in and crush the kidnappers or bomb the government officials who aren't acting on their own.

The wise use of violence is noble and effective. By "wise" I mean not using our entire treasury to yield nothing in the end.

Why should anywhere in the western world give a fuck? This "crisis" is a problem of their own making.

Nigeria is the richest country in Africa. Also, about the most corrupt. They get many $billions every year from oil revenues, and most of it goes into officials' pockets. With all their riches they could easily afford a million man army that could reach throughout the country and eliminate the muslim rebels wherever they show their faces, and even chase them into Cameroon. It was the Nigerians' choice to get the government they have, and to not spend the money they have to kill off the rebels. Let them lie in the bed they made. Maybe after the muslims kill off all the christians, they will have functioning Islamic government - no individual rights of course, and lots of female circumcision, but at least law and order.

    What Puppen said.

They're NIGERIA's girls. Not OUR girls.
