Born on this date in 1922, Bea Arthur was a feminist icon for her feisty characters in "Maude" and "Golden Girls." Maude's decision to get an abortion was a watershed in TV history--it took place in 1972, two months before Roe v. Wade became law! Arthur passed in 2009.

That was great, but I hardly recognized her. Did she have some work done?

Here at about 3:50 seconds Maude breaks her pregnancy news to best college friend Viv ("Golden Girl" Rue MacLanahan, only 39 but aged to look older; later in the famous "Facelift" episode Rue looked her absolute best):

Btw, here's the facelift episode where Rue appears 6:00 minutes in, looking her then-real age. She never looked better:

I think the one big sell-out on "Maude was later turning the "Vivian" character from a smart, wryly witty foil to "Maude" into a dumb bubblehead man-hungry for neighbor Arthur (the "Differ'nt Strokes" dad).

In this screenshot she kind of looks like her television mother Sophia.
