Poor Alec, too funny, but don't think 'rules' only apply to NYC, the big cities with lots of traffic, auto, motorcycle, bicycle and foot, only in a less crowded suburb could get away with a lax in these stupid rules in the name of 'public safety', I remember as a kid and young adult in the 70's and 80's, we rode our bikes anyway we wanted to, including a second passenger on the handle bars or a banana seat in the back, helmets? what were those?
In LA, the rules for bicyclists are the same, try riding a bike on Wilshire Blvd and not feel endangered...lol, I would rather ride on the sidewalk, for MY own safety but according to the 'rules' foot traffic, pedestrians own the sidewalks, and there are just as many stupid pedestrians as there are the rest of traffic. When ever I hear a news story about a person getting hit by a car, whether on a bike or walking, media ALWAYS blames the driver. There is NEVER any blame for stupid people on bikes or stupid people walking
Motorcyclists in LA are the worst, the 'rules' allow them to weave in between freeway and normal road traffic, instead of in their own lane, as they pass on the dotted road lines, they come within inches of your car and or your side view mirror, all you have to do, is open your car door when you see them coming and bam, instant accident.
Georgia law clarifies sidewalk biking and increases fines for motorists causing serious injurieshttp://www.atlantabike.org/content/Georgia-code-clarified-Adult-bicyclists-ride-street
"Most studies indicate that riding your bike on the sidewalk is riskier than integrating with on-street traffic. At the same time, it's human nature to worry about something coming up behind you, out of your range of vision"
This statement, study is incorrect, I feel, not safer on the street, safer on the sidewalk, but yes, the reason, for the bike rider, to ride against traffic, as Alec did, is to see the traffic coming, it's human nature to worry about something coming up behind you, out of your range of vision. Most bike riders on streets are hit from behind by a car and never saw it coming. Some rules are stupid made by stupid people
